Real Numbers’ last album, Wordless Wonder, came out in 2016, but the Minneapolis-based band has finally released a new EP, Brighter Then. The EP was recorded last winter and shows the band journeying deeper into late-’80s indie-pop.

The five-song EP is very rhythmic and easy to listen to, but lacks a certain complexity that I want when listening to music. That said, Brighter Then is great for listening to while winding down before bed, during a chill study session, or as background music for a meditation. Brighter Then has very chill and calming vibes that evoke imagery of a sunrise over a sunflower field.

With a slower tempo and minimal lyrics, the EP creates a certain serenity in the listener. Each song blends seamlessly into the next, and although the tracks do sound very similar, they each have a unique melody that stands out.
