Jason Schreurs

Managing Editor

Jason joined the Nexus in August of 1999 as an Assistant Editor and became the Managing Editor in August, 2004. He enjoys hanging out with his four kids, (ages 9, 6, 4 and 1), and obsessing over music and film. He was born and raised in Powell River, BC and moved to Victoria in the summer of 1999. Jason is a 1992 graduate of the Journalism Diploma Program at Langara College in Vancouver, where he lived from 1990-1995. He also edits Wonka Vision Magazine (Philadelphia) and writes for Monday Magazine (Victoria) and Chord Magazine (California). Oh, and Jason has given up all plans to grow a mullet.

Kristian Dart

Intern Editor

Kristian is a prophet sent here by Xenu.

Dickson Kent

Intern Editor

Many moons ago Dickson was laid off from a job in Edmonton, went into a deep slumber, and awoke on Long Beach, Tofino. He vowed to live the next portion of his life within driving distance of those beaches. After bouncing around several non-profit society and government jobs that were as appealing as a three pound neck goiter, he returned to school. The music junkie started Camosun’s Applied Communication Program in Sept. '06 and has enjoyed the rigors of being a media generalist while developing his writing skills prior to seeking employment with a non-profit society or government. Dickson’s lifelong dream is to be head of communications, and golf consultant, for the Super Furry Animals.

Laila Brown

Layout Editor

"Lails" is the office beer wench, though she has yet to bring beer to the office, or any wenchy-ness. She likes to wear kangaroo sweaters. She does not practice voodoo, but has some minor affiliations with a high ranking priest in southern Jamaica. It's partly due to her family's rum factory and sugar cane plantations where Laila worked at as a young girl. She fell in love while there, but they weren't allowed to be together because her family disproved of her boyfriends. In the autumn of her youth she denied her parents their former right of marrying her off by moving north into Canada where she befriended a young Mastiff and lived out of a van in North Dakota for six months before catching a break as independent publisher of the week in Bismark. That has led her to the island paradise she now calls home and the job she currently slaves away at for our dear master, Jason. Her life story is soon to become a major motion picture, starring Sandra Bullock as Laila, Dennis Quaid as Brendan, Morgan Freeman as Dickson, Paul Bettany as Kristian, and Randy Quaid as Jason.

Brendan Kergin

Office Assistant

Brendan is currently an Applied Communications student at Camosun, cobbling together pieces of audio, video, desktop publishing, and print into what may become a career. Contrary to the myth around him, he does not love toast and does not geocache constantly, though he enjoys both. He spends most of his time playing flash computer games and planning out his next meal and/or drinking trip.

Chris Shier

Staff Photographer

Chris was once a sailor on the high seas, but they got too high with global warming so he decided upon a more land-based profession. When Mexican wrestling fell through he felt it necessary to head north, out of the hot and humid lifestyle he was living. However, he was still a fan of the humid and the ocean, so he left the rancher's daughter he had married while in Mexico and headed to the states. Unfortunately, with the immigration from Mexico to the states, the rancher had sent some compadres to find Chris out side of LA. Chris narrowly escaped a bullet-filled battle and headed into the Oregon wilderness, where he found a copy of Nexus washed ashore just south of Portland. Unsure of where Victoria was, he kayaked up, yes UP, the Columbia River and into the small industrial town of Trail. After some confusion and a short, hazy six-month stint in Nelson, he bought a compass and headed out west. After three attempts to board BC Ferries, which he’s made an animated short film about, he made it onto the island and into the arms of Nexus staff, who still wonder why he smelled like kelp that fateful morning he was found on our doorstep.
