Victoria melodic death metal band Scimitar is set to release their second album Shadows of Man a day ahead of the 2019 Vancouver Island Metal Festival, where they will be performing. Drummer (and Camosun and Nexus alumnus) Clayton Basi, who graduated from the Applied Communication Program in 2011—calls the album a natural progression, one that was in […]

A consent agreement released by the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals on June 19 has given more details on student complaints arising from a Camosun field trip to the Philippines in 2016. The report says that former Camosun Nursing instructor and chair Stephen Bishop “took several hundred photographs of his students in their bathing […]

The Victoria Operatic Society (VOS) mounts theatre productions twice a year; with RENT and Shrek the Musical already under their belts, the assumption was VOS was done for 2019. However, that’s not the case: VOS recently announced a surprise third show, Nunsense. “This is kind of unusual for VOS,” admits director Doug Crockett. “We don’t normally—or haven’t in […]

Brian HarnettyShawnee, Ohio(Karl Records)4.5/5 You probably won’t hear it on the radio, but Shawnee, Ohio is an amazing work of art. The sixth studio release from Columbus, Ohio-based interdisciplinary artist Brian Harnetty pushes musical boundaries without the slightest hint of awkwardness. Shawnee, Ohio is a collection of archival soundbites set to music. A mixture of old and […]

Atomic Vaudeville is back at it with their annual production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The show is a single-set one-act production, which runs at a civilized hour and a half—although I’m sure it feels longer to the actors who never leave the stage! With minimal props (save a dozen or so wigs), the show, […]

Barenaked LadiesFake Nudes: Naked(Raisin’ Records)2.5/5 It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since the Barenaked Ladies parted ways with vocalist/guitarist Steven Page. But the legendary Canadian group is back with a digital EP follow-up to their 15th studio album (and fourth since Page’s departure), 2017’s Fake Nudes.Fake Nudes: Nakedfeatures eight songs from Fake Nudes arranged acoustically. […]

MountiesHeavy Meta(Light Organ Records)4/5 It’s been five years since the release of Thrash Rock Legacy, and Canadian supergroup Mounties are back with their highly anticipated second LP, Heavy Meta. Combining the creativity of Hawksley Workman, Hot Hot Heat’s Steve Bays, and Age of Electric/Limblifter’s Ryan Dahle, Mounties possess an embarrassment of talent. Expectations were high. Heavy Meta doesn’t disappoint. […]

Victoria Operatic Society (VOS) is a community theatre company with a good reputation for producing professional quality theatre. I’ve seen countless shows by VOS and, for the most part, I agree—they consistently knock it out of the park. However, their latest production, Shrek the Musical(based on the animated film), while charming, was not their strongest show. […]

The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) held their spring elections from April 8 to 10, and the initial results are in. Fillette Umulisa was re-elected as the CCSS external executive. Tamara Bonsdorf was elected into the position of sustainability director, and Eleanor Vannan was re-elected as student wellness and access director. Joshua Cameron is the […]

ClownsNature/Nurture(Fat Wreck Chords)3.5/5 The second Clowns’ Nature/Nurture started I could only think one thing: how awesome was the soundtrack to Tony Hawk’s Underground 2? This is exactly the type of music percolating from your PlayStation 2 while you throw tomatos at a half-naked Phil Margera in Barcelona. Nature/Nurture is the fourth album from Clowns, a punk band from […]
