In fact, their old band, Women, actually broke up in Lucky Bar in 2010. But the indie rockers will be steering clear of Lucky Bar this time, performing at the Upstairs Cabaret on March 29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all love Victoria, my grandma lives there&#8230; it\u2019s a great place for grandmas,\u201d says Viet Cong drummer Mike Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>With gritty guitar tones and sporadic drum patterns, Viet Cong\u2019s new self-titled album is very distinctive, especially in their original guitar tones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spend a lot of times tweaking our guitars and amps to get a certain sound,\u201d says Wallace.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10410\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10410\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/VIETCONG-David-Waldman-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10410 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/VIETCONG-David-Waldman-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/VIETCONG-David-Waldman-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/VIETCONG-David-Waldman-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/VIETCONG-David-Waldman-1-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calgary\u2019s Viet Cong embrace complexity and instrumentation experimentation in their post-punk (photo by David Waldman).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With tour dates lined up all over North America, Wallace explains the expectations that come with success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, it\u2019s been really exciting; most of the shows have been filled out,\u201d he says. \u201cIt sort of sets a fire under our asses to keep on doing better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band have also done tours all through Europe in the past and have their sights set on other places in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe played in a little commune in Copenhagen, it was amazing,\u201d says Wallace. \u201cSometimes we\u2019re in a different country every day on tour in Europe. I\u2019d love to tour in Asia, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viet Cong are known for the complexity of their music. Elaborate time signatures and frantically changing beats fill their albums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve studied music in India. I spent a couple years just counting and clapping and trying to get my head around Indian time signatures,\u201d says Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the band members are professionally trained and it comes through in their music, including a wide range of musical influences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Marquee Moon<\/i> by Television is one of our biggest influences,\u201d reveals Wallace. \u201cBands like Bauhaus and The Cure have a huge effect on us, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But influences can only go so far with a band\u2019s sound. At some point, a band will be making something that\u2019s completely original to themselves, and Viet Cong is no exception.<\/p>\n<p>The band has been working on some new material in their spare time from touring and they hope to cut a record pretty soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have July off from touring and we have two weeks booked for some studio time,\u201d says Wallace. \u201cWe plan on exploring the capabilities of our sound even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instrument equipment experimentation is a core principle in Viet Cong\u2019s sound, explains Wallace. \u201cWe\u2019ve been told to turn down the treble and volume at our live shows before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viet Cong<br \/>\n7 pm March 29<br \/>\n$12, Upstairs Cabaret<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upstairscabaret.ca\" target=\"_blank\">upstairscabaret.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calgary post-punk outfit Viet Cong is making their way to Victoria, a city they are no strangers to.
