His literary genius was in translating these experiences into profound yet often humorous and always accessible tales, as in the autobiographical <i>Wind, Sand and Stars.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>When France surrendered to the Germans during WWII, Saint-Exup\u00e9ry went into exile in America.<\/p>\n<p>It was during this time he wrote <i>The Little Prince.<\/i> Although ostensibly a children\u2019s book about a little boy who lives on an asteroid and travels to Earth, the deep philosophical implications of his adventures lend the story a rich complexity that\u2019s appreciable by readers of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>Like in many children\u2019s books, the boy encounters enchanted flowers and talking animals, but in Saint-Exup\u00e9ry\u2019s world foxes have such memorable lines as \u201cyou become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saint-Exup\u00e9ry rejoined the war and disappeared over the Mediterranean in 1944. He remains a national hero in France, and <i>The Little Prince<\/i> is one of the best selling books of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his storied life, Saint-Exup\u00e9ry was able to keep sight of his inner child.
