{"id":10607,"date":"2015-05-13T06:27:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T13:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=10607"},"modified":"2015-05-28T10:31:35","modified_gmt":"2015-05-28T17:31:35","slug":"victoria-author-andrew-macleod-hopes-for-a-better-place-in-new-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2015\/05\/13\/victoria-author-andrew-macleod-hopes-for-a-better-place-in-new-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Victoria author Andrew MacLeod hopes for a better place in new book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are times when British Columbia really is the beautiful place that the license plates promise it to be; there are also times when it feels like just a cruddy backwards province.<\/p>\n<p>In his new book, <i>A Better Place on Earth<\/i>,<i> <\/i>local journalist Andrew MacLeod (known for his work at <i>The Tyee <\/i>and <i>Monday<\/i>) discusses several unpleasant circumstances that have wormed their way into BC. People want a quick fix, and it\u2019s just not going to happen that way, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the moment it feels like nothing ever changes. That\u2019s why it\u2019s hard,\u201d says MacLeod, \u201cbut things do change and you do have to look at it as a marathon, not a sprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacLeod goes on to say that he feels that nothing is ever hopeless and even though it\u2019s easy to give up, things do change, as long as people do stick with the causes they support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInequality has risen over the past three decades,\u201d he says. \u201cIt has been changing; now how do we change it back? If change is possible in one direction, it\u2019s possible in the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As well as outlining the current situation regarding income inequality, poverty rates, the welfare system, and other pieces of the puzzle, <i>A Better Place on Earth<\/i> suggests a plethora of ways to aid, or possibly even fix, the income-distribution crisis.<\/p>\n<p>MacLeod goes so far as to say that the problem is at the point where it\u2019s not just those at the bottom who need to try to fix it: it\u2019s everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say we\u2019re at a point where lots of people do get that it\u2019s a problem,\u201d says MacLeod, \u201cthat the rising inequality is a problem not just for people at the bottom but for everyone, and for the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are times when British Columbia really is the beautiful place that the license plates promise it to be; there are also times when it feels like just a cruddy backwards province.
