{"id":11047,"date":"2015-10-02T06:33:30","date_gmt":"2015-10-02T13:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=11047"},"modified":"2015-10-05T11:51:11","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T18:51:11","slug":"art-gallery-exhibit-looks-at-the-lives-of-chinese-literati","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2015\/10\/02\/art-gallery-exhibit-looks-at-the-lives-of-chinese-literati\/","title":{"rendered":"Art gallery exhibit looks at the lives of Chinese literati"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our city, relative to its size, has long had an incredible variety of opportunities for its residents to take in many forms of cultural expression; the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) has been a constant provider of these chances.<\/p>\n<p>One of the AGGV\u2019s current exhibits, <i>Treasures of the Chinese Scholar\u2019s Studio<\/i>, promises to uphold this tradition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good show,\u201d says AGGV curator of Asian art Barry Till. \u201cIt\u2019s very academic, and a lot of people seem to be enjoying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Treasures of the Chinese Scholar\u2019s Studio<\/i> boasts beautiful calligraphy, paintings, artifacts, and other paraphernalia from the studios of Chinese scholars from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of outstanding artifacts. This is very free,\u201d says Till. \u201cThe literati weren\u2019t professional painters. They were amateurs, but often their paintings were more valuable than the professional academy painters\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The literati were people who loved to hang out with their friends, have a little drink, and create something beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were opening up their minds and showing off to their friends to try and elevate themselves as intellectuals,\u201d explains Till.<\/p>\n<p>The wide variety of items on display provides a good view of the literati lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Till says that he is proud of the quality of the show that the gallery has put together, and he believes that it will be a fun experience for anyone who comes to see it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not necessarily only the most expensive things you\u2019re going to see in the show; you are going to see what the literati loved to do,\u201d he says. \u201cIt shows their great love of education, and what they had to go through to get their education.
