{"id":1106,"date":"2011-11-02T13:30:03","date_gmt":"2011-11-02T20:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=1106"},"modified":"2012-05-23T13:05:43","modified_gmt":"2012-05-23T20:05:43","slug":"aboriginal-education-thrives-at-camosun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2011\/11\/02\/aboriginal-education-thrives-at-camosun\/","title":{"rendered":"Aboriginal education thrives at Camosun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrating its 20th year at Camosun College, Aboriginal Education and Community Connections (formerly First Nations Education) plays a large role in ensuring a successful future for aboriginal students at the college.<\/p>\n<p>The resource centre offers support for students who are in aboriginal studies. \u201cWhen I walk into this office, I feel like I\u2019m walking into a friendly home\u201d says Trevor Bach, a student in the indigenous studies program.<\/p>\n<p>The centre, which started in 1991, has expanded from serving 100 students to accommodating the needs of over 1,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1205\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1205\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Suzanne-Wilkinson1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1205 \" title=\"Suzanne Wilkinson\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Suzanne-Wilkinson1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Suzanne-Wilkinson1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Suzanne-Wilkinson1.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun student advisor Suzanne Wilkinson (photo by Carol-Lynne Michaels\/Nexus).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe are simply growing and growing,\u201d says student advisor Suzanne Wilkinson. \u201cIt\u2019s in part because of our population boom and in part because, collectively, our communities are realizing how important postsecondary education is for getting what you want out of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilkinson says that another reason aboriginal studies are growing is because society is moving further away from the past negative experiences of education that have impacted aboriginal people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore and more, our people and our communities are having positive experiences with education, and they are passing that along to their families,\u201d she says. \u201cMy hope is that we have graduation rates that are on par with the non-aboriginal rates, and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Camosun supports aboriginal studies in its strategic plan and the college is working to build a strong foundation to strengthen the future of education for aboriginal people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe college over the years has been really committed to the work we\u2019re doing,\u201d says Sandee Mitchell, program leader, student services. \u201cThere have been many years when our numbers have been really low in our programs, and the college hasn\u2019t put us on the cutting block. They\u2019ve supported us, so I give a lot of credit to Camosun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aboriginal Education and Community Connections has continued to have a vision for success and growth, helping aboriginal students through their postsecondary journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a philosophy that we all adhere to, and our philosophy is that we\u2019re here to serve students,\u201d says Mitchell. \u201cWe\u2019re here to make life better for aboriginal students who are studying here, we\u2019re here to support and hold up students who journey through the college.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrating its 20th year at Camosun College, Aboriginal Education and Community Connections (formerly First Nations Education) plays a large role in ensuring a successful future for aboriginal students at the college.
