{"id":1110,"date":"2011-11-02T12:54:39","date_gmt":"2011-11-02T19:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=1110"},"modified":"2011-11-02T13:05:42","modified_gmt":"2011-11-02T20:05:42","slug":"camosuns-rowing-club-off-to-a-rollicking-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2011\/11\/02\/camosuns-rowing-club-off-to-a-rollicking-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun&#8217;s rowing club off to a rollicking start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Camosun\u2019s recently formed rowing club wasted no time getting to the podium when student athletes Graham Obee and Trish Mara medaled in the lightweight men\u2019s single sculls and lightweight women\u2019s single at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championship in Burnaby on October 23.<\/p>\n<p>The wins come mere weeks into Camosun\u2019s rowing club existence. Although a club has long been in development, previous attempts have failed to gain enough traction to succeed. The club\u2019s recent tryouts saw 12 student athletes make the cut, a number that will hopefully increase for the spring season.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1186\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1186\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Graham-Obee-rower.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1186\" title=\"Graham Obee rower\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Graham-Obee-rower-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Graham-Obee-rower-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Graham-Obee-rower.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graham Obee of Camosun&#39;s rowing club (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a tremendous pool of athletes at Camosun that we want to expose to rowing,\u201d says Barney Williams, talent development coach of the Canadian Sports Centre Pacific. \u201cAlso, recognizing that many rowers from the junior rowing program in Victoria end up at Camosun, the thought was to provide them with a context and an environment to carry on in the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams says this is the first coordinated launch of the program that features investment from several groups, including the University of Victoria, the Victoria Rowing Club, and Rowing Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these people are really looking to support the growth of rowing in Canada,\u201d he says, \u201cthen there\u2019s increased support for new programs, and I think Camosun is really fitting the mould of a new program that we want to see happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Camosun\u2019s program will initially provide new athletes and more experienced athletes with separate training environments that cater to their abilities. Athletes new to rowing will participate in an initial orientation with the hope that they will eventually join the rest of the program\u2019s athletes in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Williams says student athletes will have the opportunity to focus their attention to the sport at hand, thanks to the partnerships in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Camosun, the challenge, obviously, is resources,\u201d he says, \u201cand the advantage is we do have partners that are really excited to support the initiative, with the Victoria Rowing Club providing resources and equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although still in the early phases, Camosun rowing coach Douglas White would like to see the program take the next step sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the objectives of the program is a two-year horizon, so we\u2019d like to see a men\u2019s eight and women\u2019s eight at varsity level being able to compete on a two-year program to accommodate university transfer,\u201d he says, \u201cand to go to the San Diego crew classic and compete in the college event every second year.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camosun\u2019s recently formed rowing club wasted no time getting to the podium when student athletes Graham Obee and Trish Mara medaled in the lightweight men\u2019s single sculls and lightweight women\u2019s single at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championship in Burnaby on October 23.
