Elise Wren, associate producer with Dance Victoria, says she\u2019s excited to welcome the production of British dance company Wayne McGregor\/Random Dance on November 4-5.<\/p>\n
\u201cWayne McGregor is one of the top three choreographers in the world right now, so the chance to bring his company to Victoria is incredible,\u201d says Wren.<\/p>\n
McGregor created Entity<\/em> in 2008 and, according to Wren, it\u2019s a perfect fit for Dance Victoria, since the company has been pursuing less ballets recently and trying to attract more contemporary works.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re trying to reach a younger demographic with this piece,\u201d says Wren. \u201cThe music for the piece is a soundscape by Joby Talbot and Jon Hopkins, who is a Coldplay collaborator. It\u2019s an electronic soundscape that sounds very Coldplay-esque.\u201d<\/p>\n Michael-John Harper, a dancer with the company, lauds McGregor for his experimental approach to choreography.<\/p>\n \u201cWayne\u2019s really interested in pushing himself as a choreographer and a dance maker, so he\u2019s been working with these cognitive scientists to look at how the brain and body works,\u201d says Harper. \u201cYou start to realize that you work in different patterns, in things that you\u2019re most comfortable with.\u201c<\/p>\n The experimental nature extends to the subject matter. \u201c[McGregor] doesn\u2019t really do narrative ballets or works,\u201d says Harper.<\/p>\n The production doesn\u2019t have a definitive middle and end, but \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of meat to it,\u201d says Wren, and it\u2019s up to the audience to interpret what they saw.<\/p>\n \u201cMcGregor plays with the idea of artificial intelligence; there\u2019s Darwinism in there,\u201d she says. \u201cHe also projects images like the Fibonacci sequence and the golden mean, ideas that beauty can come from mathematical concepts.\u201d<\/p>\n Another nod to science and math is a subtle visual motif of DNA sequences. But you won\u2019t need a science degree to enjoy Entity.<\/em> From a visual standpoint, Wren has high expectations for the performance.<\/p>\n \u201cThese dancers are some of the best in the world,\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019re seeing incredible extensions, flexibility, they\u2019re doing things that you\u2019d never imagine are possible.
