Brooklyn<\/em> is a sweet\u00a0story of the young woman\u00a0Eilis Lacey\u2014played by Saoirse Ronan\u2014and her\u00a0experience of\u00a0immigrating from Ireland to\u00a0Brooklyn in the 1950s.<\/p>\n

Beautifully scored and\u00a0costumed, the mood was set for a\u00a0magically\u00a0orchestrated period\u00a0piece. The characters were well cast with some of my favorite actors and actresses (Domhnall\u00a0Gleeson, Julie Walters, and Jim Broadbent),\u00a0who all did a phenomenal job,\u00a0and\u00a0the movie had more than one laugh-out-loud moment.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0talent\u00a0and\u00a0effort put into recreating the style and feel of the \u201950s, however,\u00a0was not matched when it came to the story;\u00a0it felt like a glossed-over version of a real story. There were\u00a0none of the issues\u00a0that\u00a0a young immigrating single Irish woman would have had to deal\u00a0with\u00a0in the \u201950s.<\/p>\n

Not once did Lacey experience prejudice, sexual harassment, or discrimination. In fact, she was able to attend school, hold down a job, and date who she wanted without anyone in the story batting an eye.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn<\/em> is a very sweet movie with just the right amount of comedy and heartbreak. And although it looks beautiful and would be perfect if you\u2019re looking for a simple and pleasant story, this movie left me feeling like it did a\u00a0disservice\u00a0to all the women who actually lived through the \u201950s, and diminished all that women have fought for since then.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
