<\/a>\u201cVery quickly, social media became the topic of interest,\u201d says Holmes. \u201cOne of our speakers came up to me after one of the events and said, \u2018This is crazy, how many people showed up; do you think we could do something like this for social media?\u2019 I said, \u2018Sure,\u2019 and the rest is history.\u201d<\/p>\n
Social Media Camp\u2019s first event took place in 2010; Holmes says it attracted around 450 people and became Canada\u2019s biggest social media conference. And despite the event\u2019s name, Holmes says it has something for just about everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat makes us unique is that we aren\u2019t just a marketing conference,\u201d he says. \u201cWe capture the whole spectrum of social media, so we have stuff that\u2019s targeted towards politics, journalism\u2026 [things] that are topical, but it\u2019s not a marketing conference.\u201d<\/p>\n
And with Victoria\u2019s booming tech sector, it makes the city the perfect location for this event.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of people don\u2019t realize that technology is our top industry, and a close second is tourism,\u201d says Holmes, \u201cso everyone wants to come here, and we already have a technology base.\u201d<\/p>\n
Holmes says social media has been the most disruptive of all technologies in the last few decades.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has cracked open every industry and every sector,\u201d he says. \u201cThere is nothing that isn\u2019t affected by social media. Because it\u2019s ever-changing, you have to be creative, you have to think outside the box, adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n
