{"id":12352,"date":"2016-08-25T09:24:32","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T16:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=12352"},"modified":"2016-09-05T09:34:13","modified_gmt":"2016-09-05T16:34:13","slug":"victoria-creative-hub-aims-to-educate-students-expand-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2016\/08\/25\/victoria-creative-hub-aims-to-educate-students-expand-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Victoria Creative Hub aims to educate students, expand community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Canadian Music Centre-British Columbia (CMCBC) recently opened the Victoria Creative Hub\u2014a lending library for contemporary music\u2014at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM).<\/p>\n<p>VCM Victoria engagement leader Christopher Reiche, whose work can be found in the library, says that the chance for the centre to grow presented itself because the city has such an active music community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw it as an opportunity to expand the Canadian Music Centre into another location to help serve and support the Victoria community,\u201d says Reiche.<\/p>\n<p>He says that the partnership between the Canadian Music Centre and VCM will\u00a0bring back classroom programs where musicians teach music to elementary- and middle-school kids for one hour a week for eight weeks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12353\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12353\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/28860507221_d75bb3afb5_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12353 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/28860507221_d75bb3afb5_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The Canadian Music Centre has opened up shop in Victoria (photo by Tom Hudock).\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/28860507221_d75bb3afb5_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/28860507221_d75bb3afb5_o.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/28860507221_d75bb3afb5_o-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Canadian Music Centre has opened up shop in Victoria (photo by Tom Hudock).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt takes several different forms depending on the class they are in, because it\u2019s really catered towards that individual class,\u201d says Reiche. \u201cSo, it can look like anything from creative activities that involve sound to having people from the class prepare pieces that are performed at the end of the eight weeks,\u201d says Reiche.<\/p>\n<p>Camosun College is partnered with VCM (VCM is a Camosun satellite campus); Reiche says that Camosun students are always welcome to come down and practice, borrow music from the library, or just chat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a loaning library of scores that have been catered toward supporting different requirements for various performance exams and that sort of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reiche says that the library is always open to Camosun students, and they are welcome to come down and\u00a0ask questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of my job here is to help support the community in any shape or form that they ask me to, so I will try my best to answer any questions and help people find knowledge about Canadian music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reiche says that for him the most amazing aspect of music culture in Victoria is \u201cbringing a new piece into the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really do like creating new things, and I like the challenge of exploring what a new piece can be,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m very much someone that likes to think about not just what people think is music, but the possibilities of what music can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reiche says that the Victoria Creative Hub always keeps in mind that people are often a little bit intimidated by new music, but that doesn\u2019t stop him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really do honestly believe that on my shelf here I have a piece of new music for everyone,\u201d he says. \u201cI want to try and find the right new music piece for anyone that walks through the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reiche says that the hub is largely centred on making music more accessible to Victorians who want to learn more and who need a space to do it in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that it\u2019s going to be a wonderful space for people to come and meet and engage with Canadian new music,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Canadian Music Centre-British Columbia (CMCBC) recently opened the Victoria Creative Hub\u2014a lending library for contemporary music\u2014at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM).
