Toronto indie-pop musician Hannah Georgas\u2019 third album, For Evelyn<\/i>, is a beautiful homage to Georgas\u2019 grandmother, Evelyn. Georgas\u2014once a student at the University of Victoria\u2014says that her grandmother has always been an \u201copen door\u201d for her but also adds that the album isn\u2019t entirely about her.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe album isn\u2019t about her, but it\u2019s a nod to [Evelyn], who has been through the \u2018been there, done that,\u2019 and myself being this other fragile thing that\u2019s basically just experiencing all this other stuff that she\u2019s already been through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Georgas\u2019 previous two studio efforts were predominately recorded on guitar and were filled with riffs and melody-laden sounds. However, on For Evelyn<\/i>, Georgas made a dramatic and beautiful shift in her sound, switching to keys and synth for the entirety of the LP. She says that the switch had a lot to do with her surroundings\u2014which, in this case, was her Vancouver apartment\u2014and the effort to be \u201cas quiet and respectful as possible\u201d to her neighbours.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to try things a little differently and mix it up,\u201d she adds. \u201cI feel like the piano is moreso an instrument that I know really well; I was trained playing the piano, and I know my way around it more than I do the guitar. I don\u2019t even actually know what I\u2019m doing when I\u2019m playing the guitar. But with the piano, it just feels like I know it inside-out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Georgas says that her show for this tour is \u201ckind of a different beast with the new songs and new material.\u201d She says that it\u2019s a new take on what she does, and that it includes a lot of synth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I\u2019m improving as a performer, and I feel different on stage, whereas a long time ago I didn\u2019t love playing live as much as I do now,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel more free and just really excited about playing and singing. There\u2019s just a different excitement and edge to the performance that I feel.\u201d<\/p>\n
