{"id":12893,"date":"2016-11-16T09:00:52","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T17:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=12893"},"modified":"2016-11-24T09:30:09","modified_gmt":"2016-11-24T17:30:09","slug":"musical-celebrates-the-work-of-canadian-folk-legend-joni-mitchell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2016\/11\/16\/musical-celebrates-the-work-of-canadian-folk-legend-joni-mitchell\/","title":{"rendered":"Musical celebrates the work of Canadian folk legend Joni Mitchell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Given that Canadian folk singer Joni Mitchell had her career peak in the \u201970s, why would Camosun College students care about <i>I Think I\u2019m Fallin\u2019<\/i>, a new musical playing at the Belfry? <i>I Think I\u2019m Fallin\u2019<\/i> director Michael Shamata says the time is right to talk about Mitchell, with Bob Dylan recently winning the Nobel Prize in Literature; he points out that, in his opinion, Mitchell is as good as, if not better than, Dylan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she\u2019s Canadian,\u201d he says. \u201cHer words are as relevant today as they ever were. And the songs are personal, and there\u2019s also a great kind of social aspect to her songs as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shamata, who has been directing musicals since 1995, says that rehearsing for the musical was a great chance to enjoy Mitchell\u2019s lyrics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12896\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016.10.20-falling_0216.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12896 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016.10.20-falling_0216-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"2016-10-20-falling_0216\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016.10.20-falling_0216-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016.10.20-falling_0216.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016.10.20-falling_0216-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I Think I\u2019m Fallin\u2019 director Michael Shamata (right) says the time is right to talk about Joni Mitchell (photo by Peter Pokorny).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSometimes the music is just so pretty that I don\u2019t hear the words as clearly because the melodies are so catchy and fantastic,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Gould is one of the actors in <i>I Think I\u2019m Fallin\u2019<\/i>; he discovered his passion for the stage at a young age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[My father was] sort of a children\u2019s magician, as a side thing, so we always used to be his little helpers, and it got us into performing and singing,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Gould discovered Mitchell when he was in high school; he says that because his school experience was a bit different than the experiences of those who went through the public school system, so was the music he was exposed to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I went to a performing-arts high school, the music we listened to wasn\u2019t the Backstreet Boys of the day or NSYNC, it was the folk artists like Led Zeppelin, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell, and, you know\u2026 that was cool. I was 14, it was cool to like Joni Mitchell, and even if you didn\u2019t really want to, that was the type of music we should be listening to, as artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for what Gould\u2019s role is in <i>I Think I\u2019m Fallin\u2019<\/i>, he says he\u2019d like to leave a bit of an element of surprise to that, but he does say that no one in particular is playing Mitchell during the musical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody\u2019s playing her, <i>per se<\/i>,\u201d he says, \u201cbut there\u2019s a movement and a storytelling that\u2019s happening through the order of the songs and how Michael has crafted it together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>I Think I\u2019m Fallin\u2019<br \/>\n<\/i>Until Sunday, December 4<br \/>\n$20-$53, Belfry Theatre<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/belfry.bc.ca\" target=\"_blank\">belfry.bc.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Given that Canadian folk singer Joni Mitchell had her career peak in the \u201970s, why would Camosun College students care about I Think I\u2019m Fallin\u2019, a new musical playing at the Belfry?
