{"id":13718,"date":"2017-03-13T12:50:45","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T19:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=13718"},"modified":"2017-03-15T07:56:06","modified_gmt":"2017-03-15T14:56:06","slug":"camosun-chargers-earn-best-national-ccaa-finish-in-history-of-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2017\/03\/13\/camosun-chargers-earn-best-national-ccaa-finish-in-history-of-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun Chargers women&#8217;s volleyball team earn their best national CCAA finish in history of college"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the Camosun Chargers losing the gold medal match of the national Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women\u2019s volleyball championship\u2014held between Wednesday, March 8 and Saturday, March 11 at Interurban\u2019s Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence\u2014to the Lakeland Rustlers, Chargers women\u2019s volleyball coach Chris Dahl is in good spirits, because it was the best national women&#8217;s volleyball CCAA finish in the history of the college. Dahl says he couldn\u2019t have asked for a better experience for Camosun fans and faculty, and, of course, the athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou reflect upon the matches leading up to that championship final,\u201d he says, \u201cand you can\u2019t help but be thankful for the performances that our athletes put in and the support that the crowd provided us along the way to make it a truly unique and memorable experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13719\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13719\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WVB_17_DAY1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WVB_17_DAY1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WVB_17_DAY1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WVB_17_DAY1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WVB_17_DAY1.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13719\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Camosun Chargers women&#8217;s volleyball team took home silver at the recent national championships, held at Camosun (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Camosun Charger Michelle Zygmunt was awarded most valuable player in the tournament, and Katie Fetting was first team all-star. Zygmunt says that although she\u2019s proud of being MVP, she is even more thrilled with the team on a whole.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Silver is incredible,\u201d says Zygmunt. \u201cIt really is. For our team, that\u2019s such a big accomplishment. For the school, as well. We made history with the best finish for the women&#8217;s team so far, so I&#8217;m\u00a0proud of my individual accomplishment, but I&#8217;m\u00a0so much more proud of the team accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fetting says that any moment where hard work pays off, especially in a way that helps the team on the whole, is amazing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still in awe that we made it to the national final,\u201d says Fetting. \u201cNo matter the result, we were all just extremely happy to make it that far. It was incredible to play in the national final in front of our home crowd. It\u2019s nice for hard work to pay off. I\u2019ve tried to do my best during the weekend and I worked my butt off to try and help the team in any way I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dahl says the excitement in PISE during the match was unparalleled, and says the game was very close to going to a fifth set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how the fifth would have turned out,\u201d he says. \u201cI always tell our athletes or any coaches that I work with that a fifth set is like a coin flip. There\u2019s so much that can happen in a short period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dahl says playing in front of a home crowd for a \u201cnail-biter of a fourth\u201d was a good way to end the tournament, and he\u2019s proud of his players, but there\u2019s always room to grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need challenge with programs at schools like Camosun, where the majority of the students that we\u2019ve encountered over the years are University Transfer, which means that you\u2019re more often than not constantly in a building and growing phase,\u201d says Dahl.<\/p>\n<p>Dahl says PISE was packed full of passionate fans showing their support, for all the various teams that were playing over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot just us,\u201d he says, \u201cmiddle school teams, elementary school kids. Our youth club volleyball team from across the lower mainland and the island were in attendance.
