You can also look at the other element of the monsters, and I thought it was a really good time to explore that through dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The style of dance used in the show isn\u2019t one most audience members will know of unless they\u2019ve seen one of Broken Rhythms\u2019 other performances. Sonik-Henderson says that the company works with a very unique style, \u201crhythmical contemporary,\u201d which she developed herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a combination of contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, and animal influences,\u201d she says. \u201cThe music is integral as well, so this gives us our own sort of identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sonik-Henderson says that <i>Universal Horrors<\/i> is a good introduction for anyone who isn\u2019t familiar with the style that is used in the performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we tried to do with this performance is make it really accessible, so if someone\u2019s not necessarily into contemporary dance, they can still come in and experience the movement and have a lot of things they can connect to. I think when people leave I want them to leave energized by the performance, but I also want them to leave feeling like they\u2019ve had a great local Victoria dance experience and that these types of productions are out there in Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sonik-Henderson says that although she usually loves to use a lot of props to help support the performance, this particular show doesn\u2019t contain many.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love using props; I think it just changes the atmosphere,\u201d she says. \u201cFor this show, we have limited props, but we\u2018ve got a video projector, so that\u2019s been our biggest prop.
