{"id":13830,"date":"2017-03-29T09:00:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T16:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=13830"},"modified":"2017-03-31T09:38:19","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T16:38:19","slug":"student-society-reasonably-confident-camosun-took-action-over-events-detailed-in-accusatory-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2017\/03\/29\/student-society-reasonably-confident-camosun-took-action-over-events-detailed-in-accusatory-letter\/","title":{"rendered":"Student society \u201creasonably confident\u201d Camosun took action over events detailed in accusatory letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) feels that Camosun College has taken action after an anonymous letter was sent to the CCSS stating that a Camosun student allegedly threatened to use a gun to shoot women at the school in November of last year, but the college is not giving out any details.<\/p>\n<p>CCSS student services coordinator Michael Glover says he immediately made inquiries to the college after the CCSS received the letter at the beginning of March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m reasonably confident that the college has taken some action,\u201d says Glover.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13831\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Joan-Yates.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Joan-Yates-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Joan-Yates-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Joan-Yates.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Joan-Yates-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun vice president of student experience Joan Yates (file photo).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Glover says the college was \u201cquick and receptive\u201d to his inquiries about the situation the letter describes. He says the letter is \u201ca legitimate safety concern,\u201d but that his inquiries led him to believe that the allegation was \u201cnot a credible threat.\u201d Glover says there is not much he can do without a student to stand behind the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re stuck, because this person is not comfortable even confidentially coming forward,\u201d he says. \u201cI would encourage them to do that if they want any more to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Camosun College security specialist Todd Corwin says that he was given a copy of the letter by the CCSS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about the letter,\u201d says Corwin. \u201cWhether it\u2019s part of a campus investigation or not part of a campus investigation, either way, I can\u2019t speak about it because that\u2019s a confidentiality issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corwin says he can\u2019t comment on whether or not the police were informed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it has become part of a college investigation involving campus security, I can\u2019t speak about that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The letter mentions Camosun Business dean Richard Stride and Exercise &amp; Wellness and Sport Management chair Gord Inglis; Inglis declined to comment for this story, and a message for Stride was returned by Camosun vice president of student experience Joan Yates. Yates says that the college has \u201ca close relationship with all legal entities\u201d in matters like this. Yates declined to comment on the letter specifically but says that instances such as these are dealt with in a variety of ways, ranging from immediate expulsion to behavioural contracts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not let such complaints go without an investigation,\u201d says Yates. \u201cIf a complaint came forward, we would act upon it in order to ensure that both the college community is safe and that the students\u2019 privacy and circumstances are protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glover says that the college does not necessarily have a duty to inform the CCSS about what\u2019s happening with situations like this one, but says that \u201cthe college has a duty to inform students of what they\u2019re involved in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yates says that Camosun doesn\u2019t have that duty; she says that the college\u2019s emphasis is on being \u201cscrupulously fair to all parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a student is under review for their behaviour, they, of course, are in the loop on it. If other students are directly impacted by something, we inform them, but, again, this is very broad,\u201d says Yates. \u201cWhat is direct involvement? But that is done after there\u2019s the appropriate risk assessment that is undertaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yates says she cannot comment on what that risk assessment entailed in this situation.
