Unfortunately, those influences add up to a disc that just isn\u2019t very effective.<\/p>\n<p>Much like the artists who inspire Class Actress, the band has created an album that has a couple of good singles, but lacks concrete direction, which it needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep You\u201d is like getting strip-searched by a wolf-hide-wearing fantasy disco woman; it\u2019s a sexy dance tune. But the rest of the album just drops off: it goes from wolf-hide woman to a waiter giving you mildly suggestive advances. It\u2019s kind of depressing: you\u2019re not really sure if she just wants a better tip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHangin\u2019 On\u201d is also pretty swag, but where is my wolf woman? Probably, but who cares? Not the 13-year-old girls rushing out to buy this album so they can memorize every word in hopes that one day at one of his concerts Justin will see them out in the crowd and notice how perfectly they sing along and then he pulls them up on stage and is all like, \u201cGirl, you sing like an angel, let\u2019s get married,\u201d and I\u2019m all like, \u201cOkay!\u201d Wait\u2026 what?<\/p>\n<p>So, the clock\u2019s ticking and I\u2019ve failed to mention anything about the actual music on <em>Under the Mistletoe,<\/em> but here\u2019s the thing: this really isn\u2019t about the music. It\u2019s about the true meaning of Christmas, which is making cold hard cash. Which is what Justin Bieber does best.<\/p>\n<p>So this one\u2019s a success. Happy holidays, everyone! King\u2019s daughter managed the project, so there may have been generational compromises.<\/p>\n<p>But from the fourth track on, classic King comes through. There\u2019s a sublime take or two on Chanukah, one which she charmingly duets with her grandson. Four songs in (once she sings to her strengths), the strands of her voice, the instrumentation, and the holidays are braided melodically together: a satisfying addition to any Christmas music library.<\/p>\n<p>King ends with the softly nostalgic \u201cNew Year\u2019s Day,\u201d the last notes trailing off, lingering for a moment. It won a Grammy and became one of the most influential albums of the \u201890s, combining electronic disco with driving classic rock to deliver the singles \u201cThe Fly,\u201d \u201cMysterious Ways,\u201d \u201cEven Better Than the Real Thing,\u201d \u201cOne,\u201d and \u201cWho\u2019s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary edition features remixed renditions of \u201cEven Better Than the Real Thing\u201d and \u201cMysterious Ways.\u201d They help to uncover the history of the band in creating the album, but come across as washed-out versions of the previous hits.
