The Lion King 3D.<\/em> The Three Musketeers.<\/em> Immortals.<\/em> These are just some of the movies that have been released during the current rush of 3D movies.<\/p>\n

And this isn\u2019t the first time 3D movies have seen a surge in popularity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the \u201850s, 3D movies were a rise against television, which was starting to eat into the studios\u2019 potential market,\u201d says Donovan Aikman, festival programmer at the Victoria Film Festival. \u201cIn the \u201980s it was home video, because people could watch their videos at home. We\u2019re seeing 3D movies again because now movies are having to compete with the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

3D movies offer something that just can\u2019t be pirated: that third dimension.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like 3D because I like to see things pop out and it\u2019s more exciting,\u201d says Angela Lee, a Camosun environmental technology student.<\/p>\n

Aikman agrees that 3D movies have some advantages over their 2D counterparts.<\/p>\n

\u201c3D is basically the icing on the cake for watching movies on a 20-to-30-foot screen,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s having those elements jump out at you and having that feeling of being more immersive.\u201d<\/p>\n

But despite their flashy effects, some Camosun students are still skeptical of 3D movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen a 3D movie,\u201d says Tom Arsenault, a criminal justice student. \u201cI just think 2D is more original.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sydney Richdale, an associate of arts student, has issues with the increased cost associated with 3D movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cMovies are already expensive enough to go see,\u201d says Richdale. \u201cI\u2019d rather just watch it in 2D; 3D doesn\u2019t really make much of a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the additional cost of 3D movies doesn\u2019t go to the box office or to the theatre companies, like Cineplex, according to Aikman. It goes to the studios.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe extra charge is actually strictly licensing fees,\u201d he says, adding that the technology is owned by studios like Disney, Dreamworks, and Sony.<\/p>\n

Most film buffs agree that the quality of the story, the development of the characters, and the acting all have to be great for a 3D movie to be truly successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cBasically it boils down to the movies,\u201d says Aikman. \u201cAre they good movies to begin with?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
