Cook is chill, but Anciients are busy these days, with the band\u2019s latest album, <i>Voice of the Void<\/i>, landing on the recently announced Polaris Music Prize longlist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe weren\u2019t really expecting it,\u201d says Cook about getting on the longlist. \u201cIt was a surprise for sure. Since then, chemistry has been awesome, he says, and the music has been a constant sound wave of good times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big mixture of different styles of metal and rock,\u201d says Cook about what listeners in Victoria can expect. \u201cWe try and have as much energy as possible when we\u2019re playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anciients are currently experiencing the payoffs of hard work, namely the roar of passionate metal fans and the experience of constantly being on the road, which Cook says can be hard at times, especially now that he is a father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of my first tour away right now from my kid for the first time, so that\u2019s been a little bit tough, but other than that it\u2019s a pretty cool job to have,\u201d he says with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Cook says that his two-and-a-half-year-old kid likes music, and he hopes that it will grow on him even more in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe mainly just likes to smash it. He strums every now and then. We got him a little drum set and a harmonica\u2026 soon he\u2019ll be forced,\u201d he laughs. \u201cNo, I\u2019m just kidding. He really loves music, so hopefully one day he\u2019ll pick something up; but whatever he wants to do, it\u2019s his choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vancouver\u2019s Dead Quiet are the opening act for Anciients when they play here in town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re an amazing band,\u201d says Cook. \u201cOur new guitarist Brock [MacInnes] actually plays in that band as well. They\u2019re a great rock band.
