He takes the stage solo these days and looks back on his time with the band with an appreciation, but he doesn\u2019t miss the large audiences. For Stringfellow, music is about sharing sensations and thoughts; that transparency got lost in the larger venues he played in the late \u201980s and \u201990s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy solo work\u2014from an emotional point of view\u2014really only works well, typically, if the audience is fairly small,\u201d says Stringfellow. \u201cIt works great when I can sing with no PA, for example. If people are too far away, even if they\u2019re into it, their attention will start to wander. I have to really be able to look them in the eyes and get right up in their face. For the solo stuff it\u2019s really great if there\u2019s as little space between me and the listener as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14382\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14382\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ken-stringfellow1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ken-stringfellow1-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ken-stringfellow1-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ken-stringfellow1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ken-stringfellow1-180x146.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ken Stringfellow is bringing his intimate solo show to town (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The transition between playing and collaborating with bands as big as The Posies, Big Star, and R.E.M to playing in venues with sometimes less than 75 people watching was Stringfellow\u2019s way to cultivate human connection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a 15- or 20-year acceleration of volume where the shows just got louder and louder,\u201d says Stringfellow. \u201cIt\u2019s fun and all, but for the solo show, I had different things that I was trying to explore that would never survive that atmosphere; they\u2019re just too fragile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stringfellow says the search for intimacy and connection with the crowd through his art was not necessarily a conscious decision; he began to realize over time that it\u2019s just what invigorated him the most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an emotional kind of intensity that has to do with focus,\u201d he says about his solo work. \u201cIf you\u2019re plying with a loud band\u2014as a listener I\u2019ve experienced this\u2014they can disappear into the noise, and noise can become like this big security blanket. In the end, yeah, it\u2019s intense because it\u2019s loud, but actually, emotionally, it\u2019s not that intense. Even something as harmless as a tiny four-channel PA, it adds a thing that\u2019s not real in a way.
