Corcoran has been involved in the play since its early stages, working closely with writer and actor Mark Crawford, whose partner, Paul Dunn, is also an actor in <i>Bed and Breakfast<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really love the form of it,\u201d says Corcoran about the play. \u201cOur two actors play the two main roles, but they also play a dozen other characters. It\u2019s a form of theatre called \u2018vocal mask,\u2019 quite an athletic form where they are switching back and forth between characters, where they are changing their voice and also their physicality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corcoran says that fast changes in character between two actors make for a challenging but rewarding directorial adventure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we\u2019re playing all of these different parts, and switching back and forth between so many different locations, the physical work of the actors needs to be really specific,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14474\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14474\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Bed and Breakfast<\/em> centres around two gay men who open a bed and breakfast in a small tourist town (photo by Andr\u00e9e Lanthier).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As far as directional style, Corcoran feeds off \u201cthe human desire and the need for connection\u201d that the play conveys, and she is always cognizant of her colleagues\u2019 creative ideas while making sure to keep an open mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way I think about myself as a director is to not put my interpretation over things, but to work with the writing and with the artists in the room to help tell that story to its best,\u201d she says. \u201cWhat I\u2019m hoping to do with my directing style is to serve this play in the best way possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corcoran\u2014who will become the artistic director of Vancouver\u2019s Arts Club Theatre Company in 2018\u2014says she has been working on this play for a long time in the interest of getting things just right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been working with Mark and with Paul to really craft this play so that it is as precise and as emotional as possible. The form of staging needs to be very precise.
