{"id":14517,"date":"2017-08-15T10:57:16","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T17:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=14517"},"modified":"2017-08-16T08:06:38","modified_gmt":"2017-08-16T15:06:38","slug":"bed-and-breakfast-thought-provoking-highly-rewarding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2017\/08\/15\/bed-and-breakfast-thought-provoking-highly-rewarding\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>Bed and Breakfast<\/em> thought-provoking, highly rewarding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve seen a play like <em>Bed and Breakfast.<\/em> Maybe because I directed plays in high school, I appreciate watching two cast members play a handful of different characters, as they did in this play.<\/p>\n<p>Once the actors (one of whom, Mark Crawford, wrote the play) found their theatre legs, the speed, focus, and precision with which they switched between a vast array of roles\u2014from an over-flamboyant closeted homosexual to a confused, withdrawn teenager\u2014 using only their voices, well-exaggerated facial expressions, and a skillfully rounded plethora of body language, was on par with Robin Williams or any of the theatrical-comic greats.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14474\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14474\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Bed-and-Breakfast-CREDIT-Andr\u00e9e-Lanthier-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Bed and Breakfast<\/em> centres around two gay men who open a bed and breakfast in a small tourist town (photo by Andr\u00e9e Lanthier).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This play makes up in writing, characterization, and sheer versatility what it lacks in setting. The audience was in stitches because of its creative and relatable humour, but <em>Bed and Breakfast<\/em> also doesn\u2019t shy away from making audience members think about their own values and experiences, with a few very intense, dramatic moments looking at the lack of acceptance of homosexuality in 2017 in some societies. The play registers on a deeply human level.<\/p>\n<p>At times, the lights and sound were inconsistent: the two characters\u2019 cellphone ringtones were mixed up, and occasionally a sound effect or two was out of sync\u2014just enough to be noticeable\u2014with a character\u2019s action. These things were there, but they were small business and did not put much of a damper on a truly memorable night of laughter, introspection, and good clean theatre, the acting and writing portion of which was truly incredible.<\/p>\n<p>This is a fast-paced, no-nonsense, high-reward performance that made me laugh until I cried. It\u2019s relatable. It\u2019s thought-provoking.
