Mike Delamont\u2019s show God Is a Scottish Drag Queen: The Second Coming tackles societal issues through humour (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u201cAnything that people have really strong opinions in is always an interesting jumping-off point for comedy,\u201d he says. \u201cI am an atheist and I don\u2019t have strong political views, but I enjoy being a devil\u2019s advocate for all of it. It\u2019s amazing when somebody looks at something one way for so long and you can point out something they\u2019ve missed the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Delamont has been able to perform in larger venues around North America, but, as a Victoria local, he\u2019s glad that he gets to premiere something here for once.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe character was created in Victoria and it\u2019s sold out every show it\u2019s ever played here,\u201d he says. \u201cFor the last few years I\u2019ve been able to tour North America playing much larger venues. I\u2019m excited to bring what I do in other cities home for people here to see.\u00a0I workshop my shows in Victoria, but rarely do I get the opportunity to bring the final product here. And it\u2019s the premiere, so that makes it extra special.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of course, being on the road all the time can be hard. Stress, exhaustion, and loneliness set in and can wear anyone down. Delamont is no exception to this and says that he\u2019s learned from what he\u2019s been through.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spend a huge amount of time on the road,\u201d he says. \u201cThe stress gets high and I miss out on a lot of things. I miss family events, and I hate being away from my wife. A few years ago, I was on tour for 70 days straight\u201434 shows in 16 cities and two countries. I was exhausted and burned out; I hated it. I make sure I don\u2019t make those mistakes anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
But with the lows come the highs; Delamont doesn\u2019t have to live a normal life, and he knows it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve had some great highlights from being on Just For Laughs [comedy festival], recording my first stand-up special for TV last summer at the Royal Theatre, and just this month I released my debut comedy album on iTunes\u2014all really cool things. Any day that I don\u2019t have to go out and get a regular job is a career highlight for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
