Both of these spots will be filled with the work of Visual Arts faculty in the <i>R + D <\/i>exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>Camosun Visual Arts instructor John Boehme says the sculptural medium of ceramic objects is particularly interesting to work with because it\u2019s always changing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that draws me to the medium, which is so fascinating, is the various iterations they go through,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s hard, it\u2019s soft. It\u2019s also the oldest medium that humans have been working with in terms of sculpture and functionality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boehme\u2019s chosen medium for this project could hold your morning coffee or make you delve into a whole different area of obscure artistic pleasures.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14729\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/25.5-x-32.5-France-14x19squares-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14729\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/25.5-x-32.5-France-14x19squares-sm-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/25.5-x-32.5-France-14x19squares-sm-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/25.5-x-32.5-France-14x19squares-sm.jpg 494w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/25.5-x-32.5-France-14x19squares-sm-300x425.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/25.5-x-32.5-France-14x19squares-sm-180x255.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun\u2019s Joseph Hoh\u2019s <em>Untitled<\/em> will be on display at R +D this year (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt skirts those lines between functionality\u2014meaning the toilet, and the sink, and the mug, and the bowl\u2014and then it can be a sculptural form, which really can echo every gesture the human body can make,\u201d he says. \u201cIt goes through different stages, which is so fascinating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boehme says things can go belly-up at any point in the artistic process\u2014especially when he is working with a medium that is so changeable and breakable\u2014but he doesn\u2019t shy away from those realities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like those reconfigurations that can happen with a work. The one that\u2019s up in the library was a new exploration of how to display and install ceramic work in particular; in the middle of the class, I was showing students what I had created, and then I flipped it upside down and the whole thing fell,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cAnd then I said, \u2018Well, this is a great opportunity: you could look at it as being broken, or you could look at it as a great opportunity for you to reconfigure and rethink the work and use different materials.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boehme says it\u2019s important for students to see their instructor\u2019s work, to recognize that they still produce as well as teach, and to embrace the effect that can have on their own creative processes while always making sure that their work is original.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to have the instructional technologists and the faculty also working hand-in-hand together, which we have been for the last 43 years,\u201d says Boehme. \u201cIt\u2019s great for the students to see that we do what we say we do, by exhibiting and making work, taking risks, putting it out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>R + D<br \/>\n<\/i>Until Monday, October 16<br \/>\nLibrary mezzanine and\u00a0between Young 111 and 117,\u00a0Lansdowne campus<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/camosun.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">camosun.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Next time you think your teachers are robots who don\u2019t exist outside of class, head to the mezzanine in the Lansdowne library or the space between Young 111 and 117, also at Lansdowne.
