{"id":14828,"date":"2017-10-18T09:00:08","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T16:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=14828"},"modified":"2017-10-16T12:23:40","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T19:23:40","slug":"victoria-symphony-brings-frights-to-stage-with-film-score-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2017\/10\/18\/victoria-symphony-brings-frights-to-stage-with-film-score-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"Victoria Symphony brings frights to stage with film-score performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Orchestra music doesn\u2019t normally go bump in the night, but that\u2019s about to change.<\/p>\n<p>Sean O\u2019Loughlin is conducting the Victoria Symphony this month in <i>Hollywood Thrillers<\/i>, during which the symphony will perform songs from scary movies such as, among others, Hitchcock films, classics <i>Jaws<\/i> and <i>Psycho<\/i>, and the \u201990s smash <i>Jurassic Park<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of music really accelerates my heart rate from a purely musical standpoint,\u201d says O\u2019Loughlin. \u201cMaybe [the audience\u2019s] heart rates will get a few more ticks a minute than they anticipated. He says there\u2019s a thrill-seeker in each of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know when we go to work and we do what we do, there\u2019s a certain predictability about that,\u201d he says. \u201cAt some point as humans we want to have something that maybe does jar us in a certain way, or excites, or it accelerates the heart rate and gives us something to really be thrilled about, because there\u2019s just a little bit of danger involved in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Loughlin says that when the music is separated from the movies like this, it allows for more creative freedom and flexibility, which gives the symphony the ability to stretch out more climactic moments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[This] allows the music to stand on its own and in turn allows the listener and the audience member to kind of go back and make their own visual attachment to that music that they hear,\u201d he says. \u201cMusic is just like a sense\u2014you hear a familiar theme or a familiar sound, and it\u2019s a way to be transported back to the time period. There\u2019s plenty of music on here that they know and love, and they\u2019ll be able to relive all those great memories. Not all of the music they might have heard before, which is wonderful; there\u2019s the element of discovery that should be there when going to a concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s music that we love and know and want to hear, and there\u2019s music that we want to challenge us, says O\u2019Loughlin.
