It\u2019s a complete album, which, unfortunately, is a rarity these days.<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher has reunited with producer Mark Stent\u2014known for his work with U2, Madonna, and Bruce Springsteen, among others\u2014for the first time since his Oasis days.<\/p>\n<p>There are tracks that could slide into Oasis\u2019 second effort,<i> (What\u2019s the story) Morning Glory<\/i>, with none but the most avid of fans noticing the difference. \u201cFor What It\u2019s Worth\u201d plays to the sentiments of several generations who have been united by songs like <i>Morning Glory<\/i>\u2019s<i> \u201c<\/i>Don\u2019t Look Back in Anger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>As You Were <\/i>may be the harbinger that ushers in a new era. And, as good of an album as it is, it just makes me think that an Oasis comeback is inevitable. Although their debut, 2013\u2019s <i>Scorn<\/i>, had a more terrifying album cover (Google it, but watch yourself), the raw sludge metal sounds this Colorado-based band deliver on <i>Caustic<\/i> are even more extreme and dig deeper into the endless well of despair these guys draw from.<\/p>\n<p>If you manage to make it through the first half of the album\u2014filled as it is with songs that more or less sound like someone dying; sludge metal\u2019s tempos are notoriously slow and the genre also features hallmarks such as ear-destroying feedback and singing that channels pure hatred\u2014you then get rewarded with the 10:20 \u201cDisfigured\u201d and the 12:28 \u201cInevitable,\u201d two back-to-back epic sludge onslaughts, before the album ends off with the 8:58 \u201cAbsolutes,\u201d which is nothing more than a series of disorienting noises.<\/p>\n<p>Cathartic, sincere, and extremely difficult to listen to, <i>Caustic<\/i> is well worth checking out as a prime example of raw, sincere sludge.<\/p>\n<p>-Greg Pratt<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14931 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins-70x70.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins-110x110.jpg 110w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/The-Elwins.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Elwins<br \/>\n<i>Beauty Community<br \/>\n<\/i>(Hidden Pony Records)<br \/>\n3\/5<\/p>\n<p>The third studio album from Ontario indie rockers The Elwins feels like a coming-out party. They\u2019ve completely embraced the pop sound that was hinted at but drowned out by guitar licks on 2015\u2019s <i>Play For Keeps<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Vocalist\/guitarist Matt Sweeney has stepped back with his guitar to blend in with the new sounds. The band use programmed beats, danceable bass lines, and infectious synth, and, somehow, pull it off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey! Ya, You\u201d sets the tone from the start, and it\u2019s next to impossible to stop tapping your foot for the album\u2019s duration. Earbugs like \u201cOMG\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Walk Away from Me\u201d are littered throughout <i>Beauty Community<\/i>, sometimes flirting with sonic memories from decades past. The band experiments with slower tempos on \u201cDream Girl\u201d and \u201cGrind You Down\u201d and African-influenced percussion on \u201cDream Girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for the second coming of \u201cSo Down Low,\u201d keep looking.
