Just ask Camosun SCUBA Club founder and president Rebecca Golat. Golat, a third-year Environmental Technology student, says that one dive costs roughly $75, depending on what kind of equipment you need. But, because they are a registered club through the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS), the CCSS covers half that cost, with the divers having to pay only the other half.<\/p>\n<p>Golat says that because diving is so expensive, there\u2019s no way she would have been able to do it on a student budget without the CCSS helping with funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt dramatically reduced the cost,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14997\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14997\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2578-e1510683245344.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2578-e1510683245344-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2578-e1510683245344-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2578-e1510683245344.jpg 466w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2578-e1510683245344-300x451.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2578-e1510683245344-180x270.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun SCUBA Club founder and president Rebecca Gloat (photo by Adam Marsh\/<em>Nexus<\/em>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Golat fell in love with diving when she was 12, after her parents got her diving lessons for her birthday; she says that Vancouver Island is hard to beat when it comes to diving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the best cold-water diving spots in the world is right here on Vancouver Island, so it was kind of natural to put [the club] together,\u201d says Golat.<\/p>\n<p>Diving requires a licence, but there are options if divers don\u2019t want to get certified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had people that joined that weren\u2019t certified and we planned a couple of snorkelling trips that you didn\u2019t have to have a diving licence for,\u201d says Golat.<\/p>\n<p>Golat says that the experiences to be had in the water in this part of the world are really something special.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I moved here the first thing I did was sign up to do a sea lion dive out at Race Rocks, and that was really awesome,\u201d she says, adding that it was one of her best dives. \u201cThe sea lions will come up to you, and they\u2019re really curious. They\u2019re like big puppies. They\u2019ll kind of nibble on your fins, and you\u2019ll turn around, and they\u2019ll blow bubbles in your face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was Golat\u2019s most memorable experience in the water; she says the size of the sea lions is not something to be taken lightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re huge,\u201d she says. \u201cThe males will be the size of a grizzly bear. It was very cool. I thought it would be scary, but when we got down there and we were with them, they\u2019re not intimidating at all. They\u2019re very playful and curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are about 20 people in the club; Golat says some dive occasionally, while the die-hards go every time.
