His sixth studio release\u2014and second solo effort\u2014is a great album, full stop.<\/p>\n<p><i>Once Upon a Hell of a Time <\/i>offers a window into the life of Matt Mays. He takes us on a wild ride of poetic memoir, delving into love, loneliness, and loss\u2014and the resulting self-medicating\u2014all the while remaining true to his own style of rock, which is reminiscent of Matt Good and Joel Plaskett.<\/p>\n<p>On first listen, the album seems to lack a radio hit like 2012\u2019s \u201cTake It on Faith,\u201d but solid tracks littered throughout <i>Once Upon a Hell of a Time<\/i> will grow on the listener.
