Period Posse organizer and University of Victoria student Lindsay Shaw says that the drive is especially important to those who are struggling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt impacts any menstruating person who\u2019s maybe living at the margins and has a hard time affording menstrual products,\u201d says Shaw.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw says that not having access to these products, and being forced to come up with other solutions, can really impact peoples\u2019 physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15163\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15163\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/lindsaygradprofile.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/lindsaygradprofile.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linsday Shaw of the Period Posse (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people can\u2019t afford menstrual products, so they\u2019re forced to use makeshift methods like socks, newspaper, toilet paper, things like that,\u201d she says. \u201cBy providing the menstrual products, it helps their health and it also helps give them more freedom of choice to spend their money on other things that they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shaw says that a box of tampons is about $7, so it can make quite a difference if someone doesn\u2019t have to worry about that expense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you can take away that stress, it gives them more options to buy other things that they need, which, I think, can have ripple effects, and, also, you\u2019re providing a sense of security I think will change their day too,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw thinks that a big reason why menstrual products are not being donated is that it\u2019s just not on people\u2019s minds as menstruation isn\u2019t something we frequently discuss. Additionally, she says that organizations trying to help often don\u2019t have sufficient budgets to address this need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are places to access [these products] but there\u2019s never enough and that\u2019s why we\u2019re doing the drive,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The services provided by the Cool Aid Society are accessible to anyone having a hard time making ends meet, not just for those living on the streets, says Shaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone that menstruates can access these products,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Donations are accepted all year, but this particular drive ends on December 20, with the products being distributed at the Sandy Merriman House and Rock Bay Landing.
