{"id":15198,"date":"2018-01-08T09:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-01-08T17:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=15198"},"modified":"2018-01-11T09:30:22","modified_gmt":"2018-01-11T17:30:22","slug":"government-website-gives-students-a-chance-to-critique-college-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2018\/01\/08\/government-website-gives-students-a-chance-to-critique-college-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Government website gives students a chance to critique college policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training recently launched a new website for students to give feedback about their post-secondary institution\u2019s sexual violence and misconduct policy, as well as to give feedback about provincial ministry guidelines around the policies.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release dated December 4, 2017, provincial minister of advanced education, skills, and training Melanie Mark said that the guidelines in the provincial legislation that required all post-secondary institutions to have a sexual violence and misconduct policy in place by May of 2017 \u201cwere important first steps\u201d and that consulting students a minimum of once every three years for a review of the policy will help ensure everyone feels safe on post-secondary campuses. (Mark was not available to comment for this story.)<\/p>\n<p>Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) external executive Mitchell Auger-Langejan says both Camosun and the provincial government conveyed the policies in a fair and strong manner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15199\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mitchell-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mitchell-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mitchell-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mitchell-2.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mitchell-2-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mitchell-2-180x240.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun College Student Society external executive Mitchell Auger-Langejan (file photo).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cStudents who will put measures in place to protect them are ultimately better educated and have more tools, not only to know what\u2019s wrong and right in those situations, but what\u2019s in place to protect them,\u201d he says. \u201cA student who\u2019s educated about that is ultimately empowered in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Camosun, he says, also does a good job in being clear in its policy by eliminating ambiguity. (Camosun College vice president of student experience Joan Yates did not respond to a request for comment.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey go really into detail about what is and isn\u2019t acceptable,\u201d he says, \u201cand how these things are dealt with [in a] fair and equitable way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Writing terms and policies, says Auger-Langejan, is important so that the average person knows what is and isn\u2019t acceptable behaviour. But some situations are complex, and these policies account for that, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey talk about situations in which an individual isn\u2019t able to [give] consent. If two people get together and they\u2019re both really drunk, the situation becomes complicated. People in those situations do need to consider their actions before they proceed because it\u2019s more difficult to gauge a person\u2019s state\u2014what they want, what they\u2019re comfortable with\u2014when they\u2019re inebriated like that,\u201d says Auger-Langejan.<\/p>\n<p>College students specifically, says Auger-Langejan, should learn about this part of the act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will be, from time to time, put in a situation where they have to make a judgment call there, and making the right one could be potentially a very important thing for them,\u201d\u00a0 he says. \u201cA clear understanding of what those situations are and how to act appropriately is one of the strongest points.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First year Psychology student Cortnee Erickson says that it\u2019s important that everyone has their voices heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially on a sensitive topic like that, definitely people\u2019s voices need to be heard,\u201d she says. \u201cI think that\u2019s really smart. You\u2019re getting people\u2019s views on it, you\u2019re getting people\u2019s opinions on the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First year Environmental Technology student Andrew Warren says he wants people to be able to freely express themselves with healthy and normal behaviours such as dating and flirting, but he says that it is a fine line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople shouldn\u2019t feel like they\u2019re victims in any circumstance,\u201d he says. \u201cThere should be a platform where people can report things that they feel are threatening their safety, and any awareness that people can raise about what their actions might make other people feel\u2014I think that\u2019s valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Auger-Langejan says the provincial government put forth \u201cstrong straight-forward guidelines\u201d that asked for specific input.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething that\u2019s quite common is people put policies in place,\u201d he says, \u201cbut unless they\u2019re enforced or discussed or people are educated about them, they don\u2019t have a lot of power over change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Feedback on Camosun\u2019s policy and ministry guidlines can be given until 4 pm Monday, January 29 at <a href=\"http:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/preventsexualviolence\/feedback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engage.gov.bc.ca\/preventsexualviolence\/feedback<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training recently launched a new website for students to give feedback about their post-secondary institution\u2019s sexual violence and misconduct policy, as well as to give feedback about provincial ministry guidelines around the policies.
