When not performing with Robbie Slade as indie electronic duo Humans, he keeps active creating animated media (his past work included the television show <i>League of Super Evil<\/i>). Things are busy, he says, and it seems to be true: Humans recently finished up a North American tour in support of their new EP, <i>Feels<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one is 100-percent new stuff,\u201d says Ricq about the material they played on the tour, adding that most of the time they play 20 percent new material live. \u201cThe response has been pretty positive. I feel like everyone always says, \u2018Oh, this is a bit darker from what you\u2019ve done before.\u2019 I feel like we\u2019ve always had this touch of darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ricq says he and Slade listen to lots of different kinds of music, and that comes through in Humans\u2019 sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I like about our music is that we find we can mix a lot of the genres together in electronic music, maybe more so than other types of music. It\u2019s going to be more liberating; it\u2019s just a little more experimental and fun that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking those sounds and putting them together in a live setting means a lot to Ricq, who loves connecting with a crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people say, \u2018I met my girlfriend at your show,\u2019 or, \u2018I met my husband at your show,\u2019 and I\u2019d like to keep that going, you know? People have an experience to remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Humans like to engage with the audience at their shows, and they even take that so far as to sometimes go into the crowd while they\u2019re performing, says Ricq.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my motto since day one,\u201d he says, regarding interacting with the crowd. \u201cRobbie is really good at that. I\u2019m always looking down at the gear and trying to make the song work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band are also working on their next release, says Ricq, which will most likely be out in the spring. He says it\u2019ll be an extension of the sounds that are on <i>Feels<\/i>; for now, he\u2019s looking forward to coming to Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to the next show and getting ready for the album,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot on the plate that we\u2019re doing.
