Just ask Danielle Sweeney, singer of local indie\/soul\/pop band<i> <\/i>Lovecoast. Although she is in a long-term relationship now, Sweeney says a main theme on <i>The Trip<\/i>, the band\u2019s first full-length album, is the idea of learning to love yourself first and foremost, then loving others; the album is the opposite of a love story, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe song \u2018Motion,\u2019 that\u2019s about this day and age and the way that people date, and the whole Tinder era\u2026 this idea that you don\u2019t have to stick to one person or you don\u2019t need to follow the rules. Everyone wants to live in this very quick-moving relationship,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney says most of the songs on the album are about someone realizing that in order to be able to move forward in a relationship they need to take care of themself first.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15729\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BV-LOVECOAST-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15729\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BV-LOVECOAST-02-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BV-LOVECOAST-02-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BV-LOVECOAST-02.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BV-LOVECOAST-02-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Victoria indie\/soul\/pop band Lovecoast are releasing their debut album, <em>The Trip<\/em>, on April 28 (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou really have to be in love with yourself before you can love someone else,\u201d she says, \u201cand almost all the songs on the record carry that sort of a theme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney prefers to be settled now, and she recognizes that it\u2019s sometimes hard to find someone else who feels the same way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always the island and there\u2019s always the ocean,\u201d she says, referencing \u201cMotion\u201d\u2019s lyrics. \u201cThe ocean is the person who\u2019s constantly moving around them and not allowing the relationship to go further beyond just an initial visit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Making the album was a two-year process during which Sweeney pushed herself both creatively and personally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe probably wrote 30 songs,\u201d she says, \u201cand only 10 made the cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the writing process, Sweeney\u2019s grandmother passed away. Sweeney took time off and went back home to Squamish, where she and her family came together and looked through photo albums with pictures of her grandma. The photos eventually became inspiration for the band\u2019s cover art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a photo of a woman on all of our album art so far,\u201d says Sweeney. \u201c[The] \u2018Lonely\u2019 [single] has it\u2026 and then also <i>The Trip <\/i>album cover does as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney says her grandmother was always really supportive of her musical career, and the photos are Sweeney\u2019s way of honouring her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were about three months into, \u2018Okay, this record\u2019s happening,\u2019 and that was when she passed away,\u201d says Sweeney. \u201cTo me, it felt like all of the creative energy that I had was taken out into this wave of grief. I didn\u2019t want to write with the guys; I didn\u2019t want to get together. I was just kind of out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While she was in Squamish, one of her cousins digitized old pictures of her grandmother, which sparked an idea in Sweeney\u2019s head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got to see all these pictures of her my age, living her life and being very happy and energetic and just herself,\u201d she says. \u201cIt kind of sparked an interest in me to honour her in a way, if I could, with this record; she was a huge supporter of my music and me as a singer.
