{"id":1581,"date":"2011-11-30T11:55:23","date_gmt":"2011-11-30T19:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=1581"},"modified":"2011-11-30T11:55:23","modified_gmt":"2011-11-30T19:55:23","slug":"duo-cycles-canada-for-forest-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2011\/11\/30\/duo-cycles-canada-for-forest-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"Duo cycles Canada for forest awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While many feel powerless to affect environmental change, a wildlife biologist and a musician recently cycled over 11,000 kilometers across Canada to raise money and awareness for endangered forests.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1582\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1582\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NigelJaime.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1582\" title=\"Nigel&amp;Jaime\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NigelJaime-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NigelJaime-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NigelJaime-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NigelJaime.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jaime Hall and Nigel Jackett cycled across Canada for forest awareness (photo by Liza Dawson-Whisker\/Nexus).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wildlife biologist Nigel Jackett and musician Jaime Hall arrived tired but triumphant on a blustery Remembrance Day to a small crowd gathered at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tremendous privilege in our society,\u201d says Hall, \u201cto travel so slowly and truly appreciate the distances involved in crossing the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The couple kept a blog of their daily adventures (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tilthelasttree.com\" target=\"_blank\">tillthelasttree.com<\/a>) and a log of birds they spotted along the way; for each new species of bird added they collected pledges, amounting to 333 species and over $4,000 by the end of the journey.<\/p>\n<p>The money raised will go to the Ancient Forest Alliance, a BC organization working to protect the province\u2019s old-growth forests and to ensure sustainable forestry jobs in the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving met so many passionate, conservation-minded Canadians on our ride, I feel like we are so close to changing the outdated environmental policies currently employed by the government,\u201d says the Australia-based Jackett, who saw the cycling trip as an opportunity to do something close to his heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have keep pushing for this; the old-growth forests are on the brink,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The couple also hopes to raise awareness about the province\u2019s old-growth forest management strategies, as well as what they say are the broken lines of communication between government ministries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing the rest of Canada in such detail also reinforces how unique BC\u2019s old-growth forests are,\u201d says Hall, \u201cand how vital it is to protect them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While many feel powerless to affect environmental change, a wildlife biologist and a musician recently cycled over 11,000 kilometers across Canada to raise money and awareness for endangered forests.
