Boraas says the college\u2019s existing appeal process focuses on academics, but he says he was obligated to consider the context of human rights in this situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a student who has grounds under human rights\u2014and, in this case, sexualized violence falls under that\u2014any of those things require us to act in ways that predict as to whether or not the experience of the student could arguably have been tampered by the experience they had,\u201d says Boraas. \u201cIf someone is assaulted, indeed, I would argue that that is something that would interrupt learning and, arguably, they would have done better had that not happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15368\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Young-Building.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15368\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Young-Building-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Young-Building-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Young-Building.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Young-Building-180x135.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun College is reassessing its grade-appeal process (file photo).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Boraas says that government policy demands new behaviour on the part of the college when it comes to student grade appeals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe province mandated a policy on sexualized violence and misconduct and in it, what they\u2019ve mandated is that if someone suffers an assault that institutions have a responsibility to help keep them whole,\u201d says Boraas.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, says Boraas, it is assumed that an incident would have an impact on a student&#8217;s ability to be successful. However, Boraas says he can not speak to specifics in this particular situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI absolutely can\u2019t speak to the grounds for the appeal,\u201d says Boraas. \u201cAll I can do is give a general assertion that we\u2019re dealing with this new environment of different legislation that demands we behave somewhat differently than we have in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three students were allowed to move to the next level of the course in question, and underwent three hours of tutoring a week on top of class time. Boraas says that there are many protections within the program to make sure students develop the skills they need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe added in the support piece to ensure as much as humanly possible that the students are given that opportunity to make up any deficits,\u201d says Boraas.<\/p>\n<p>Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) student services coordinator Michael Glover says the CCSS has wanted to see the college address their appeal process for some time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly something that we\u2019ve been interested in and pushing for\u2014a revamp of that very old policy,\u201d says Glover. \u201cWe certainly have a lot of experience with it in practice, and it could be better for students in a lot of ways because, in practice, it\u2019s outdated. It doesn\u2019t cover everything. It\u2019s time for a revamp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boraas says everybody who has been involved in Camosun policy development, as well as\u00a0 \u201ca much broader cross-section\u201d of people, will be invited into the policy development conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll rebuild that so everybody kind of has a transparent understanding of what the process should be, rather than it being me doing my best to navigate an existing policy that isn\u2019t as up to date as it should be,\u201d says Boraas. \u201cYou\u2019ll see a policy development communication coming out soon.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camosun College is reassessing its grade-appeal process with an eye on human-rights issues after three nursing students successfully had their failing grades appealed.
