New York drummer Rudy Royston will be playing at Hermann’s First Annual Jazz Fest (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u201cWe\u2019re not going to R&B too much, or to folk,\u201d says Joy. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to stay in the mainstream jazz and to be like the New York jazz clubs. We believe in the musicians here in town.\u201d<\/p>\n
The festival consists of 33 shows and will feature locals and international jazz musicians, such as Michigan pianist Benny Green and New York drummer Rudy Royston.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese guys are big, big, huge names, so we\u2019re pretty grateful to have all this happening, and for them to want to come because of Hermann\u2019s\u2019 legacy and knowledge of the club being a great room to play,\u201d says Joy.<\/p>\n
Joy says doing a live jazz show is a full experience, and that\u2019s what keeps people coming back.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey feel comfortable walking in\u2014the lighting, the sound, the smell, the food, the taste, the cocktails; we\u2019ve done it all,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve made it into a very comfortable environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Joy says that although some customers were unhappy with the changes in the beginning, they are thrilled at the club now.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what it is; it\u2019s how you feel when you go to a place like this,\u201d says Joy. \u201cIt\u2019s how you feel when you leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
Joy says that Hermann\u2019s is not out to compete with other jazz festivals (the TD Victoria International JazzFest runs concurrently with the Hermann\u2019s jazz fest).<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re super lucky to have such quality musicians here in Victoria, and that\u2019s why we wanted to showcase the jazz fest,\u201d she says. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to compete, we just wanted to do something different with ours. We\u2019re a jazz club, so we have to keep doing jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n
