The crash came during registration for January 2019 courses.<\/p>\n<p>Camosun registrar Scott Harris says that Colleague\u2014the database platform Camosun uses\u2014is \u201cquite an old implementation\u201d and that because it\u2019s getting \u201cvery long in the tooth, the customizations are starting to cause issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been customized over the years to ensure that it had the functionality that we and that students required,\u201d says Harris.<\/p>\n<p>The college is now partway through its Colleague renewal exercise, which Harris calls a \u201csignificant undertaking\u201d that involves removing the customizations that are causing the bugs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose customizations can be very invasive on the systems,\u201d says Harris. \u201cThey can start to create issues over time, and that\u2019s exactly what we experienced [the week of October 8].\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16552\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Camlink-down-treated-for-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Camlink-down-treated-for-web-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Camlink-down-treated-for-web-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Camlink-down-treated-for-web.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Camlink-down-treated-for-web-180x122.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun College students were recently unable to log in to Camlink to register for their winter 2019 classes (photo by Adam Marsh\/<em>Nexus<\/em>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The customizations around Camosun-specific features such as web declare \u201cimploded,\u201d says Harris. As part of a multiple-year revamp plan, the college is making many adjustments to Camlink, including everything from changing how the technical department receives notifications when something goes wrong to replacing the web declare section. Harris says he has not ironed out the financial side of specific replacement plans because this is a multiple-year endeavour that the college is about halfway through. Harris adds that the college is always looking to be fair to students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never want to be in a situation like this where students have a start time and aren\u2019t able to get in,\u201d says Harris. \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly frustrating and very stressful.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the initial crash, Camlink was down from October 13 to 15 due to problems in the monitoring tools that Camosun\u2019s technical team uses to keep an eye on the well-being of the computer systems across the college.<\/p>\n<p>Second year Criminal Justice student Halie Gislason says that she had to contact the college due to the outage to be sure that she could still get into the courses she needed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to register for classes and the times kept changing,\u201d she says. \u201cI actually had to go talk to the chair of the program to make sure that I could get into the programs that I originally thought, because everything filled up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gislason says Camlink on the whole is a \u201csilly concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy couldn\u2019t we do it through D2L or something that we use daily, rather than a third or fourth party? It\u2019s kind of inconvenient to students,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>First-year Criminal Justice student Ryan Basi says he was also impacted by Camlink crashing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was hard to register for classes. Now that they say the website\u2019s up, I know everyone\u2019s just waiting to register,\u201d he says. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m going to be on the waiting list, or I won\u2019t be able to get a lot of my classes that I wanted to get.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Basi says his overall experience with Camlink has been okay, but it can be confusing at times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it\u2019s been helpful, too,\u201d he says. \u201cI just hope they can make sure that the website doesn\u2019t crash like it has been; it kind of sucks for the students to have to deal with it.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Harris says that as part of the Camlink improvement plan, the college will be removing web declare and getting rid of the college\u2019s customized registration process.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the things we\u2019re looking at toward the future will be things like two-term registration, so when you register in the summer, you\u2019re going to be registering for fall and winter at the same time,\u201d he says. \u201cUltimately what we\u2019re looking to do is get rid of the stuff that we have created over time that has added increased complexity to the system, and has also made things more confusing for students.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Harris says the college is looking to use the systems in the way that they were designed to be used.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way that we\u2019re doing the registration windows right now are based on program, and we\u2019re looking at other practices that we think might be more fair and reasonable and clear for students,\u201d says Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Harris says only about a handful of students were not able to get into the courses they needed because of the crash; there were not more students than usual who were unable to get into the courses they needed because of this, he says.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re dealing with that on a case-by-case basis,\u201d says Harris. \u201cWe need to do a better job of making sure that students are communicated with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Camlink crashed on October 11, an email was sent to impacted students at 2:13 pm informing them that their new registration time was that day at 2:30 pm. Harris says that the college is looking at options such as texting to improve its communication with students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have catastrophic things like this happen and we need to be able to communicate with students quickly,\u201d says Harris, \u201cemail when they\u2019re in class may not be the best way to do that.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Harris says that some students wanted to move the registration cycle to the next day, but that would make things more unfair, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would have meant all students in the registration cycle were impacted, and we\u2019re trying to make sure that the impact was on as few students as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camlink, Camosun\u2019s online course-registration system, went down on October 11 and again from October 13 to 15, leaving students and faculty unable to access the site.
