{"id":16851,"date":"2018-12-03T12:29:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-03T20:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=16851"},"modified":"2018-12-10T13:36:08","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T21:36:08","slug":"history-being-made-camosun-college-student-society-joins-canadian-alliance-of-student-associations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2018\/12\/03\/history-being-made-camosun-college-student-society-joins-canadian-alliance-of-student-associations\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cHistory being made\u201d: Camosun College Student Society joins Canadian Alliance of Student Associations"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>On Friday, November 30, the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) was officially accepted into the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA), a national student organization based out of Ottawa.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>CCSS external executive Fillette Umulisa and CCSS executive director Michel Turcotte attended CASA\u2019s lobby week in Ottawa, during which a plenary took place where the CASA board of directors agreed to accept the CCSS into CASA.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cI felt like I was seeing history being made,\u201d says Turcotte. \u201cIt was surreal to me to be there for that moment.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_16852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16852\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CCSS-CASA-e1543868600923.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16852 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CCSS-CASA-e1543868600923-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CCSS-CASA-e1543868600923-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CCSS-CASA-e1543868600923.jpeg 525w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CCSS-CASA-e1543868600923-300x400.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CCSS-CASA-e1543868600923-180x240.jpeg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun College Student Society executive director Michel Turcotte (left) and external executive Fillette Umulisa (centre) (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>Turcotte says that he never thought the CCSS would join CASA; the CCSS were members of the other national student organization, the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), for years until being expelled from the CFS in June of 2018.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThe Camosun College Student Society was in need of a way of representing itself nationally, and [CASA] is effective in making sure that the federal government hears its message,\u201d says Turcotte.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Turcotte says the culture of CASA\u2019s lobby week was very professional.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThis one was a little different than any that I had been involved with in the past in that it was professionally done,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were using an app, essentially, so if things changed we got updates all the time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The CASA lobby week reception was held on Tuesday, November 27 on Parliament Hill, and consisted of CASA representatives as well as MPs and senators.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c[This] was the first time I\u2019ve been in a lobby session where that has happened,\u201d says Turcotte.<\/p>\r\n<p>The CCSS gave CASA $20,000 for fees during the trip; the money was collected from Camosun students as part of their student fees. The $20,000 is for part of what the CCSS owes CASA for membership fees, says Turcotte. CASA charges for membership based on total institution enrolment, which is calculated on a full-time equivalent basis.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cOnce we get the numbers we need from the college, eventually, we will be reconciling that amount and making sure that CASA gets all the money that\u2019s due under its bylaws,\u201d says Turcotte.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Camosun students voted to be members of CASA in the fall CCSS elections, which happened from Monday, October 22 until Thursday, October 25.
