Now the Windsor-based alt-rock duo are coming to Victoria during their first North American headlining tour, in support of their debut full-length, <em>Black Holes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before vocalist\/guitarist Tarek Jafar and drummer Justin Tessier became The Blue Stones, the pair were good friends through high school and university, and they began playing together after six years of knowing one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJustin was the first person I asked, \u2018Hey, why don\u2019t you check out some of the stuff that I\u2019ve been writing?\u2019 We just started practicing some of the songs together and they sounded good and we went along with it,\u201d says Jafar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/The-Blue-Stones-Photo-Fall-2018-Credit-Sam-Shapiro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/The-Blue-Stones-Photo-Fall-2018-Credit-Sam-Shapiro-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/The-Blue-Stones-Photo-Fall-2018-Credit-Sam-Shapiro-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/The-Blue-Stones-Photo-Fall-2018-Credit-Sam-Shapiro.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/The-Blue-Stones-Photo-Fall-2018-Credit-Sam-Shapiro-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Windsor\u2019s alt-rock duo The Blue Stones have already come a long way in their short career (photo by Sam Shapiro).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking influence from artists such as The Black Keys and Acid Jazz, the duo write their songs based on what they want to hear themselves, but it seems to be connecting with a wide audience. Now they\u2019re bringing those songs to town to connect with the Victoria crowd. Jafar says the experience of touring across the continent has been exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time that we are going off on a tour where we are the headliners, so it\u2019s really exciting for us,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s so crazy to pull up to a city and have people come out. It\u2019s been amazing to see the support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Blue Stones\u2019 2015 single \u201cBlack Holes\u201d was one of the songs that really helped the band take off. It\u2019s been streamed over a million times on YouTube alone, never mind on other streaming services like Spotify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a song that reflects our past or journey as a band,\u201d says Jafar, \u201cbut, really, I think it relates to a lot of people who have to make big decisions early on now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Black Holes<\/em> contains some of the band\u2019s earliest material, but as Tarek looks ahead to their second album, he says the material will be a bit different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe next [album] is going to be a lot punchier, a lot more groove, a lot more hip-hop influence, and definitely more alternative-rock leading,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The duo also have high hopes of collaborating with other artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[We] would love for that to be a part of the next project,\u201d says Jafar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Blue Stones<br>7 pm, Tuesday, April 2<br>$15, Lucky Bar<br><a href=\"http:\/\/luckybar.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"luckybar.ca (opens in a new tab)\">luckybar.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From being good friends just jamming together and discovering their sound to breaking through and achieving success, The Blue Stones have come a long way.
