{"id":1755,"date":"2011-12-07T11:34:48","date_gmt":"2011-12-07T19:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=1755"},"modified":"2011-12-07T11:34:48","modified_gmt":"2011-12-07T19:34:48","slug":"employee-course-teaches-aboriginal-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2011\/12\/07\/employee-course-teaches-aboriginal-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Employee course teaches aboriginal history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What started out as a simple word document has blossomed into a multimedia development tool for employees of Camosun College.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1756\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/michel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1756\" title=\"michel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/michel-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/michel-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/michel-180x270.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/michel.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun&#39;s Corrine Michelle says Camosun&#39;s cultural sensitivity program has been a success.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A unique learning experience called Teltin Tte Wilnew teaches cultural sensitivity and the history of aboriginal people to college staff.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past three years, 125 Camosun employees have taken the voluntary program, which won an award in program excellence in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe course offers a brief history and outline of indigenous people and colonial history in four units and it\u2019s a blended delivery, which means it\u2019s taught online and face to face,\u201d says Corrine Michelle, Camosun indigenization coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeltin Tte Wilnew\u201d translated from the West Saanich means understanding indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Starting out as an info-filled word document, the course has expanded into utilizing various different media sources, such as streaming video and links to a wealth of informative websites. Taking full advantage of technology, the course has had great success educating people, according to Michelle.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from its heavy content, ranging from residential school history to the \u201860s adoption scoop of First Nations children, the course adds humour in the form of Darrell Dennis and his <em>ReVision Quest<\/em> radio show and CBC blog, which puts cultural stereotypes into a comedic light.<\/p>\n<p>An important part of the program is learning about territory and the importance of acknowledgement of where we inhabit, says Michelle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first unit is about learning indigenous names for the different places we are living,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The indigenous history of territory isn\u2019t always widely available and most people don\u2019t know that the places we live in already had names before being inhabited by European settlers, who gave them new names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hasn\u2019t always been called James Bay, it\u2019s not always been Oak Bay; there are indigenous names for these places,\u201d says Michelle, \u201cMount Doug, Mount Tolmie, all have their own aboriginal names and they have stories that go with them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What started out as a simple word document has blossomed into a multimedia development tool for employees of Camosun College.
