Little Skeletons<\/em><\/p>\n (independent)<\/p>\n 3\/5<\/p>\n When listening to The Lost Lovers Brigade\u2019s debut album, Little Skeletons,<\/em> a few key phrases come to mind, phrases like \u201cmeh,\u201d \u201cit\u2019s aight,\u201d and \u201cI guess I could see people being into this.\u201d Now, that\u2019s not saying this Vancouver band is terrible\u0143there\u2019s something that catches my attention about them. Perhaps it\u2019s the homemade recording feel, or Elisha May Rembold\u2019s eerie pop\/country textured vocals. I\u2019m not 100 percent sure.<\/p>\n Ultimately, though, it\u2019s not all the way there, which is fair enough, as this is their first album. Just keep an eye on this band because there\u2019s some talent brewing.<\/p>\n Maybe we\u2019ll just have to wait until the indie hipster kids get a hold of it and run rampant, all of them claiming to have been the first to listen to The Lost Lovers Brigade. And then I can be all like, \u201cYeah, well, I totally reviewed their debut album.\u201d<\/p>\n Stupid hipsters.<\/p>\n -Clorisa Simpson<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Cat Empire<\/strong><\/p>\n Asylum<\/em><\/p>\n (Tunes for Change)<\/p>\n 4\/5<\/p>\n Asylum<\/em> is a charity release benefiting the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Australia. It features alternate versions of old Cat Empire songs, plus new ones, and songs from members\u2019 other, previously released, projects.<\/p>\n \u201cHere Come the Scissors\u201d by The Genie brings The Cat Empire\u2019s rhythm section to the forefront\u0143where they belong. Felix Riebl\u2019s \u201cI Won\u2019t Know You Anymore\u201d is a gorgeous step up from Cinema<\/em>\u2019s \u201cNo Longer There.\u201d And Roscoe James Irwin evokes Elliott Smith on \u201cPass the Time.\u201d<\/p>\n The standout tracks on Asylum<\/em> both come from Harry James Angus. His evocative, imagery-rich songwriting is highlighted on the curiously melodic \u201cDave\u201d by Jackson Jackson, and on \u201cUnderground.\u201d<\/p>\n Asylum<\/em> exemplifies the fact that musicians exist not in a void, but in a community. And be sure to act fast: once the donation goal of $50,000 is reached, this will no longer be available.<\/p>\n -Rose Jang<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Marianas Trench<\/strong><\/p>\n Ever After<\/em><\/p>\n (604)<\/p>\n 4\/5<\/p>\n This Juno-nominated pop-punk band from Vancouver had a lot to live up to with their third album, Ever After,<\/em> considering their last album, Masterpiece Theatre,<\/em> had great songs like \u201cCross My Heart\u201d and \u201cCelebrity Status\u201d on it.<\/p>\n Their single \u201cHaven\u2019t Had Enough\u201d is already causing waves on iTunes, but it\u2019s other tunes, such as \u201cEver After,\u201d with its strong, vocal beginning, \u201cPorcelain,\u201d with its slow but heartfelt lyrics, and typical Marianas Trench upbeat songs such as \u201cB Team\u201d or \u201cFallout\u201d that have great potential to make it into the spotlight.<\/p>\n Be prepared to get up and dance – or at least stay seated and tap your foot – to this album.<\/p>\n Even better, Ever After<\/em> flies from song to song with no pauses in between, and the fun will last the whole 54 minutes that the album is playing.<\/p>\n -Chesley Ryder<\/p>\n <\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/lost.jpg\" "\\"lost\\"")
