Like\nmany students, I\u2019m finding my sea legs again after the insanity\nthat was end-of-the-semester mayhem. Finals are done, grades are in,\nand I\u2019m back in the swing of working full time and having my\nevenings free from homework\u2014also known as having time to write\nthings that I\u2019m not getting graded on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the many upheavals to my own schedule, I’m also, like many students, dealing with massive shifts in the schedule of my partner (who is also a student). For us, this means him embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime travel adventure for over five weeks while I\u2019m here in Victoria living my normal life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\nthe record show: I fully support his decision. And I\u2019m only a\nlittle bit jealous that he gets to spend the next month writing\ntravel pieces in a stunningly beautiful location while I have the\nprivilege of working 9 to 5 and baking in an apartment with no\nairflow, watching Friends\n<\/em>at night alone.\nAnd, while I may lament, there is actual validity in this statement.\nBefore we started dating, I spent many summers doing this routine,\nand I find comfort in it. I like being able to binge-watch my\nguilty-pleasure TV shows (looking at you, Jane\nthe Virgin<\/em>), eating\nwhat I want for dinner without having to discuss it, going for\nevening coffee with girlfriends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\nwith this routine comes the sympathy. I\u2019m not talking about the\nempathetic checking-in texts from his or my mom, I\u2019m talking about\nthe constant barrage of \u201cOMG, how are you doing?! How are you\nsurviving?!\u201d statements that have replaced the obligatory \u201cHow\u2019s\nschool?\u201d conversation openers (I may be paraphrasing here, but you\nget the idea). When I assure the other person that I\u2019m doing really\nwell, I get a follow-up reassurance: \u201cHang in there! The time will\nfly! He\u2019ll be home soon!\u201d And I\u2019m standing there, like, \u201cI\nunderstand how time works\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again,\nlet the record show: I have a countdown on my phone to the second his\nflight lands. And yes, after the initial novelty starfish stretch\nacross the bed, I miss his shoulder nook like crazy, but, no, I\u2019m\nnot hyperventilating into a paper bag over his absence (full\ndisclosure: as I write this, we are only on day five of 39, so that\nmay come).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But,\nfor now, every time I get the \u201cHow are you?\u201d I feel like an\nasshole, because I\u2019m kinda loving my little routine. I am an\nindependent woman, and I like my space\u2014again, I reserve the right\nto change my opinion on this in a few weeks. But I can adult on my\nown with great success. I don\u2019t want to get all \u201cI don\u2019t need a\nman\u201d soap-boxy here, but the reality is, yes, I love my partner,\nyes, I miss him, but I\u2019m not crumbling at the seams without him.\nAnd I\u2019m pretty sure that\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
