But Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) women\u2019s director Shayan de Luna-Bueno says that it\u2019s important that students understand that they can always make a difference. The CCSS is trying to make a difference right now by integrating the United Nation (UN)\u2019s sustainable development goals into the work it does for students; de Luna-Bueno recently went to the New York High-Level Political Forum, a UN conference in New York where the goals were discussed. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of what the CCSS does has been already aligned with [UN sustainable development] goal four: quality education,\u201d says de Luna-Bueno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/received_1054721751404868.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/received_1054721751404868-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/received_1054721751404868-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/received_1054721751404868.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/received_1054721751404868-180x135.jpeg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Camosun College Student Society women\u2019s director Shayan de Luna-Bueno (left) speaks at a United Nations conference in New York (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the New York forum, de Luna-Bueno was able to talk with Canada\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals Unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe theme of it was intergenerational equity,\u201d says de Luna-Bueno. \u201cA big emphasis was on community engagement in youth, which is already what the CCSS is doing with our student society\u2026 Governments and political societies really want to push for more of a youth voice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important that, with all the social change happening in the world today, institutions have students at the table while having conversations, says de Luna-Bueno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Canadian government was also looking for more push for student and youth voices as well,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether the issue is quality education, climate justice, or equity, the onus falls on this generation, says de Luna-Bueno.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHonestly, we wouldn\u2019t be having these conversations if it wasn\u2019t for our previous generations\u2014having to pick up their work, and essentially fix the mistakes,\u201d she says. \u201cHopefully when we\u2019re pushing for more in the future these things don\u2019t happen again and we don\u2019t have to have these conversations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main thing, says de Luna-Bueno, is actually getting student voices heard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of big, high-level organizations or high-level government officials talk about, \u2018Oh, yeah, we want to include you, we want to include students,\u2019 and they just&#8230; I really want actual meaningful discussions that we\u2019re not tokenized, or that when we are there, it\u2019s accessible to people there,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversations at the forum were full of \u201cbig academic political jargon,\u201d says de Luna-Bueno, who found that, because of the language, it wasn\u2019t accessible to everyone. There were discussions at the forum about not leaving people behind, which she found ironic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was all able-bodied people, [and they] were already leaving people behind,\u201d says de Luna-Bueno. \u201cAccessibility is a huge thing for me&#8230; It\u2019s so hard to be taken seriously as students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CCSS collaborating with other organizations is key to making politics more accessible for students, says de Luna-Bueno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents need to try to get on the ground as much as you can,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen we talk about social change, it seems like, for our generation, like it\u2019s the end of the world: \u2018Climate change is happening, we can\u2019t do anything, we\u2019re all going to die anyway.\u2019 There is still that opportunity for change.
