At her presentation, Bell shared how Camosun embeds student learning in local businesses and community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI went through our community partnerships, our Indigenous community partnerships&#8230; The last part of it, I talked about our overall mission statement at Camosun\u2014we\u2019re an applied, relevant learning institution,\u201d says Bell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As second nature as this philosophy is to Camosun, Bell says that it\u2019s a novel way of thinking about education in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the place where they\u2019re at right now\u2014trying to figure out how what we\u2019re doing can be replicated in their country,\u201d says Bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1547-FOR-WEB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1547-FOR-WEB-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17939\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1547-FOR-WEB-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1547-FOR-WEB.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1547-FOR-WEB-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1547-FOR-WEB-180x240.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Camosun president Sherri Bell (right) and SEAMEO\u2019s Ho Thang My Phuong (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But with the drastically different styles in education, Bell says that there were takeaways that can better Camosun as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI heard a presentation from a woman from Australia,\u201d says Bell, \u201cand she was talking about just how they track student involvement in other kinds of things outside of the classroom, so that they can be credentials for them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bell met with the speaker after her speech and asked if she could see the system they use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the summer sometime, I\u2019m going to get into it and look, just to see how they\u2019re doing it,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause it is something that, when you look at the world of education right now\u2026 We have at Camosun certificates and diplomas and degrees; students are looking for other alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These alternatives include \u201cbadging\u201d and \u201cmicro-credentials\u201d; in other words, packaging the life experiences that students have had, says Bell, so that it counts for something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that I\u2019ve been researching with other institutions,\u201d says Bell. \u201cI had a conversation with BCIT about what they\u2019re doing and this kind of fed into something that was of interest to me to research, so here I was in Vietnam listening to someone from Australia, and now I have a connection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another aspect of the trip for Bell was outreach; she says that Vietnam is the market that has improved the most for drawing students to Camosun, although she says the point isn\u2019t just to get international student numbers up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe major focus we\u2019ve had in international education is to diversify,\u201d she says, \u201cnot to increase our numbers tremendously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are students at Camosun from about 75 different countries, says Bell; the college doesn\u2019t have a lot of students from Vietnam, but over the last four years, the number has been steadily on the rise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a country that we\u2019re working pretty closely with, both in my role as president at Camosun, and as chair of BCCIE,\u201d says Bell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bell says that the most memorable part of the trip was a conversation she had over dinner with SEAMEO center director Ho Thang My Phuong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learned about where she went to school, where she grew up, just her journey,\u201d says Bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of that journey was getting posted to her first university teaching position, says Bell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018What do you mean, \u201cposted?\u201d\u2019 She said, \u2018The government tells you where you\u2019re going to go work.\u2019 We got into a conversation about the country, and where it\u2019s come from the 1970s until now\u2014what she\u2019s proud of. It was an individual opportunity to build a relationship with someone who\u2019s doing a similar job to what I do in a completely different country.
