{"id":18388,"date":"2019-10-23T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T16:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=18388"},"modified":"2019-10-28T09:36:26","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T16:36:26","slug":"camosun-college-student-society-elections-on-the-horizon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2019\/10\/23\/camosun-college-student-society-elections-on-the-horizon\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun College Student Society elections on the horizon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) is having its fall student elections from Monday, October 28 until Wednesday, October 30.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There will be elections for positions on the CCSS board of directors and for student positions on the Camosun College education council.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The CCSS board manages a variety of auxiliary functions for students. These include the Universal Bus Pass (UPass), health and dental benefits, and the Camosun Bookstore Textbookswap program. The CCSS runs advocacy campaigns on behalf of student interests, such as the Get out the Vote campaign encouraging voter participation in the recent federal election. The CCSS also helps organize student clubs and runs events on both campuses.<\/p>\n<p>CCSS external executive Fillette Umulisa says that she feels like the CCSS does great work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives a person a purpose to know that there\u2019s a thousand-plus students out there that are kind of counting on you to represent them,\u201d she says.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18389\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18389\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4F037857-73EA-4DBF-9393-99CD8534A45C.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4F037857-73EA-4DBF-9393-99CD8534A45C-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4F037857-73EA-4DBF-9393-99CD8534A45C-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4F037857-73EA-4DBF-9393-99CD8534A45C.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun College Student Society external executive Fillette Umulisa says she feels like the student society is doing great work on campus (photo by Eli De la Cruz\/<em>Nexus<\/em>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Umulisa says that being on the CCSS board goes beyond that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes me feel like I\u2019m part of a really big community and that, to some extent, I do matter,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>CCSS executive director Michel Turcotte says that student involvement in the CCSS matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think of some of the initiatives that would never have happened without student governments,\u201d he says. \u201cInternational students wouldn\u2019t be able to work off campus without going through huge headaches like applying for visas; students would still be paying for AUG [Adult Upgrading Grant] and ELD [English Language Development] courses; there\u2019d still be interest on student loans\u2014there\u2019s numerous things that students have successfully pushed for over the years that everyone takes for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second-year University Transfer student Max Glassel says that the upcoming CCSS election is an important exercise in local democracy that provides students with more power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think it\u2019s important because it\u2019s democracy at the most local possible level,\u201d says Glassel. \u201cFor many students with political aspirations it\u2019s an amazing place to start, and their first experience running for office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First-year Interactive Media Developer student Lucius Hall says that he wasn\u2019t aware of the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew there was an election,\u201d he says, \u201cbut I hope to learn more about it now that I do.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First-year Mental Health and Addictions student Julia Hinse says that she doesn\u2019t intend to vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I don\u2019t plan on it,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause I have no idea what it is.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Turcotte says that people don\u2019t get anything by not voting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, the opposite is what is true\u2014if you don\u2019t participate, you have no excuse to complain about what happens,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"http:\/\/camosunstudent.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">camosunstudent.org<\/a> for more information about the election and the services the student society offers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) is having its fall student elections from Monday, October 28 until Wednesday, October 30.\u00a0 There will be elections for positions on the CCSS board of directors and for student positions on the Camosun College education council.\u00a0 The CCSS board manages a variety of auxiliary functions for students.
