Early success with hits like \u201cStriptease\u201d and \u201cJealous of Your Cigarette\u201d had Toronto-based singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman playing in front of sold-out audiences that wouldn\u2019t leave happy if he didn\u2019t play another of his hits, \u201cSmoke Baby.\u201d The tough part comes when an artist needs to evolve while, to a degree, their audience stands still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the crux of the conundrum if you\u2019re trying to have a long career,\u201d says Workman. \u201cI can pre-contrast that with the fact that I too am a music fan who wishes all my heroes and favourite acts wouldn\u2019t change. There are moments as a hardcore fan where I\u2019m asking, \u2018Why couldn\u2019t he have just stayed the way he was?\u2019 or \u2018Why couldn\u2019t he have evolved differently?\u2019 We tend to lock into our favourite artists, and we want them to remain who they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18529\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18529\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/HWStandingColour-PhotoCreditDustinRabin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/HWStandingColour-PhotoCreditDustinRabin-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/HWStandingColour-PhotoCreditDustinRabin-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/HWStandingColour-PhotoCreditDustinRabin.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/HWStandingColour-PhotoCreditDustinRabin-305x207.jpg 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18529\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hawksley Workman is bringing his ever-evolving sound back to Victoria (photo by Dustin Rabin).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Workman says that he feels like his fans who have been on board from the beginning have had to put up with a lot from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI frustrate myself, and I\u2019m sure I frustrate them,\u201d says Workman. \u201cBut with this new record, I knew that I almost needed to rewrite the contract with my fans and say, \u2018I know I\u2019ve been screwing around the last couple of records, but this is just a reminder that songwriting and great singing are still at the core.\u2019 I wanted to re-establish what it is that I do well, and re-establish the terms on which my fans and I have been involved, and evolved with one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Workman says that it\u2019s a part of his character that he\u2019s chronically dissatisfied with everything.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the scenes, when I release a record or write a song, I can kind of glean an emotional benefit from it for a short time,\u201d says Workman. \u201cFor instance, on the new record, when I wrote \u2018Battlefords,\u2019 I knew right from the beginning that it was one of the best songs that I had ever written, but I think that excitement might have lasted for a day and a half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Workman and his band will be in town to promote his latest solo album, <i>Median Age Wasteland<\/i>, this month; it\u2019s perhaps his best and most complete LP to date. Over the years, Workman has had his hands in a lot of different things\u2014he\u2019s released 16 solo albums, found chart success as a member of Mounties (with ex-Victorian Steve Bays of Hot Hot Heat fame), and produced recordings for some of the biggest acts in Canada\u2014but he says his career hasn\u2019t always unfolded as planned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the bulk of my youth and adolescence, my whole goal was to become a celebrated session drummer, and that was everything for me,\u201d says Workman. \u201cMy years in high school, I was practicing three to five hours a day. I had reached an agreement with my family, because the drum set was in the same room as the TV, that when the family was sitting around watching TV I would only play during commercials. I was obsessive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Workman has played drums on all of his records, but it wasn\u2019t until <i>Thrash Rock Legacy<\/i>, Mounties\u2019 2014 debut, that he let the world know just how good he is behind the kit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrums was somewhat of a secret for me because I had put thousands and thousands of hours into it, and I was playing at a professional level when I was a teenager, but it didn\u2019t pan out,\u201d says Workman. \u201cThe songwriting thing just kind of took off.
