The college has since paired up with Rouge Media, an advertising company that specializes in marketing to high school and college students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1870\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1870\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DSC_5064.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1870\" title=\"DSC_5064\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DSC_5064-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DSC_5064-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DSC_5064-180x119.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DSC_5064.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This ad in the Paul building is an example of what the college now allows to be displayed (photo by Carol-Lynne Michaels\/Nexus).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kathryn Le Gros, director of ancillary services at the college, says Camosun is using the ads to generate much-needed funds for the college, although she refuses to reveal how much money was involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to be entrepreneurial,\u201d says Le Gros. \u201cThe college needs to have the resources to make sure that we\u2019ve got the educational services and facilities that students need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertising in schools, including elementary schools, is a controversial but growing trend in Canada. But administrators maintain it\u2019s a necessary one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTuition fees and government grants alone don\u2019t cover the cost of our education,\u201d says Le Gros. \u201cWe\u2019re here to provide a really wonderful environment for students, and in order to do that we need to have a revenue stream that allows us to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The college has allowed advertising on campus for years, although never to the current scale. Le Gros hopes that under the new policy the number of ads will increase as time goes on, with no restrictions on the types of media used, such as audio or video.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Glover, student services coordinator of the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS), says the CCSS wasn\u2019t consulted before the college\u2019s advertising policy was changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe student society agrees that we should have input on all advertising that happens on campus, however, at the end of the day the college has the right to govern itself,\u201d says Glover. \u201cWe will monitor the situation and, as always, seek to influence the college\u2019s policies to the benefit of our members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest arguments against advertisements in schools is that they encourage students to spend money that they don\u2019t often have in the first place, such as their student loans.<\/p>\n<p>Levi Karpa, a Camosun university transfer arts student, feels that educational institutions should be free of commercial enterprise altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur universities are one of the last places that are free of explicitly biased information, and advertising is by definition an opinion,\u201d says Karpa. \u201cThe advertisers stand only to make a financial profit from the ads, and that contradicts the goal of education.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camosun students can expect to see more advertising on campus this year, including a 12-foot long, floor-to-ceiling poster for Rogers Wireless in the Paul building at the Lansdowne campus.
