This will be added to the current $15 daily per diem from the Chargers for a total of $40 per day. The CCSS\u2019 portion of the money\u2014a total of $20,730\u2014will last for the duration of this Chargers season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found out that the athletes were only getting $15 a day when they travel, and honestly, that\u2019s not enough, because what can you get for $15?\u201d says CCSS external executive Fillette Umulisa. \u201cWe [believe] that students should not have to pay from their own pockets when representing the college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Umulisa says that this is not simply an act of goodwill by the CCSS, and that the CCSS wants to encourage Camosun to increase the subsidy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese students represent [Camosun] at a high level, and if they win, it\u2019s the college winning, and they should be treated better than $15 a day for food.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18759\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18759\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/49123039588_cf4bcb7e01_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18759\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/49123039588_cf4bcb7e01_o-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/49123039588_cf4bcb7e01_o-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/49123039588_cf4bcb7e01_o-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/49123039588_cf4bcb7e01_o.jpg 466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Camosun College Student Society will be helping Chargers student athletes with food expenses this season (photo courtesy of Camosun Chargers Athletics).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Camosun Chargers recreation and athletics coordinator Graham Matthews says that the per diem is considered a supplement to the athletes\u2019 own money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would just be an add-on at this time. As much as we want to provide as best we can, that\u2019s what we thought was the going rate,\u201d he says, referring to when the per diem was initially established (Matthews is unsure of the year the rate was put in place).<\/p>\n<p>Umulisa believes that fully covering food costs should be considered an investment in the success of college teams, similar to paying for athletes\u2019 transportation when they travel for the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t just eat a sandwich and expect to perform,\u201d she says, asserting that good food is a necessity, not a privilege. \u201cI do feel that it is a very unfair treatment towards our athletes. Camosun College and the [Camosun College] Foundation should [step] up; if they can\u2019t find a solution, they can fundraise for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chargers men\u2019s basketball forward Shaquille Maharaj feels that the College has the means to carry on with a $40 per diem after the CCSS stops contributing, especially considering there are only five Chargers teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes we take a look at these fundraisers and we\u2019re like, jeez, that\u2019s a lot of money, and even if we just had half of that, it could be a huge contribution to Chargers Athletics,\u201d he says. \u201cCamosun could be more focus-driven toward taking care of Chargers Athletics, because there are only a few of us who are representing the college, and we really want to do our best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maharaj says that he really appreciates the student society helping out the Camosun student athletes with the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s all we can really ask for as athletes\u2014someone with a voice vouching for us,\u201d he says. \u201cBut look at our athletic department size compared to every other school; I think [Camosun] could take care of them a little bit better, because it\u2019s only a short season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthews says that Camosun is hoping to increase the budget for the player\u2019s per diems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to talk with our administration and see how we can make that increase consistent from here on in,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re just very pleased at the support of the CCSS helping out their fellow students, and we\u2019re always trying to provide the best we can for our athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maharaj says that he is relieved and excited about the per diem raise and believes this will be a boon for the Chargers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, we can actually go out and get a good meal before and after a game, and there\u2019s not so much stress,\u201d he says. \u201cWe really need to optimize our recovery and nutrition, because once you\u2019ve had your final practice, that\u2019s the only thing that\u2019s really going to contribute to performing better.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) approved a motion at its November 4, 2019 board meeting to provide a temporary $25-per-day per diem for food and incidentals for every Camosun Charger student athlete while they are travelling for games.
