Sure, the program will include the second act of <i>Swan Lake<\/i>, <i>Go for Barocco<\/i>, and <i>Paquita<\/i>, but the all-male drag ballet troupe will present them as parody.<\/p>\n<p>The troupe\u2014affectionately known as The Trocks\u2014was founded in 1974 with a very unique comic approach to traditional ballet. Company dancer Joshua Thake started dancing in classical ballet schools but came across barriers imposed by long-established standards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t the body type that companies were looking for; they were looking more for a linebacker body build,\u201d says Thake. \u201cI guess I wasn\u2019t masculine-enough-looking to do ballet in a more traditional ballet company, so I became kind of a misfit.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18890\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18890\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/208_photo-credit-Marcello-Orselli.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18890\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/208_photo-credit-Marcello-Orselli-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/208_photo-credit-Marcello-Orselli-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/208_photo-credit-Marcello-Orselli.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo dancer Joshua Thake (photo by Marcello Orselli).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Thake was still in ballet school, a friend showed him a DVD of a Trocks performance. He remembers how the idea of his own dance career changed from when he first watched that DVD until he decided to audition for the company, which he considers to be the most epic career transition he could have made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was my first time seeing the company and it didn\u2019t even cross my mind to be a part of that group, because I was so dead set on being a part of a more traditional company,\u201d says Thake. \u201cBut then that didn\u2019t happen, and I found such great therapeutic release in drag then I started to reconsider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thake acknowledges the success of Brooke Lynn Hytes, former Trocks dancer who was the first Canadian on <i>RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/i> and will be a judge on <i>Canada\u2019s Drag Race<\/i>. In addition, Thake praises the construct of drag ballet and the funny original creations that can come of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe show has so many moments that intersect both of those great dualities that I think that is the recipe that makes it a successful show,\u201d says Thake.<\/p>\n<p>The Trocks\u2019 dancers prove that men can indeed dance in ballerina shoes, and actually do well in them. Thake laughs at the fact that he once auditioned without any ribbon or elastic on his shoes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are expecting the fall, so if I happen to fall, which does happen many times, I do great,\u201d he says. \u201cI learned how to land without bruising too intensely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thake explains that the show is structured to be enjoyable for everyone, regardless of how much ballet they\u2019ve been exposed to, and he even sees it as possibly a great way for people to introduce themselves to ballet and to become ballet enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe show is so accessible because we pander to the structure and rigours of a very well-known art form, but different people have different experiences with it,\u201d says Thake. \u201cSo, like an onion, there are more layers that can be exposed the more exposure you have to that art form.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo<br \/>\n8 pm Tuesday, February 4<br \/>\n$36 and up, Royal Theatre\u00a0(sold out)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rmts.bc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rmts.bc.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo comes to town in February, the unconventional will take the stage.
